"A Shrinking Island" has been really important to my thinking about the arts and ideas in mid-century Britain. It is immaculately researched, rigorously argued and very finely written. Moreover, it's a foundational text for "new" modernist studies, and a hugely significant work from which I - like so many others - have derived an enormous amount.
But do note that, apart from the Contents and the Notes, the text of the Kindle download I purchased was centred on the screen - and not, as is usual, justified left. This made it unreadable and I returned the download and claimed a refund. I have since purchased a paperback, which I what I recommend you do also.
