英語版
Louis Sachar
(著)
Welcome back to maths class at Wayside School. How much is peppers + pig lips? If Jenny's shirt has sparkles on it, will Todd have egg in his hair? These Sideways Arithmetic problems may look puzzling at first, but you can use real maths to solve them, and the answers are perfectly logical. There are lots of clues and hints, plus all the answers are right there in the book. Best of all the children you have read about in the other books about Wayside School are here to help you! Try solving the brainteasers in this book, along with Mrs Jewls and the children from her class, and maths will be a dream!

GREAT BOOK FOR KIDS AND ADULTS
2023年9月17日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I'm an adult and love the puzzles. It keeps me sharp. Children who like math generally like these puzzles also. One negative review focused on the silly stories that are a set up for the puzzles. That misses the entire point. I found fun puzzles that require arithmetic and logic.

also interesting is the approach enabling left and right lobes to communicate (out of the box)

Makes advanced logic and math approachable and fun.

Most kids and adults who try to solve these problems probably won't even realize how much math and logic they are learning. As a math teacher, I admire how brilliantly these puzzles are put together and I haven't encountered any kids who weren't interested in these puzzles. Even those who don't like math like to read the puzzles and start in trying to solve them, although if they're not good at logical thinking and they don't get any hints or clues they are likely to give up. (Actually, the book includes hints and clues for most of the problems, in a separate place from the answers.)
I especially like "game day" (the last chapter or thereabouts), which contains logic puzzles of the form "Given facts A, B, C, D—which of the following MUST be true?" The facts and conclusions are goofy and fun ["if Joy has whipped cream on her nose, Todd will have egg in his hair"], and these puzzles range from very simple syllogisms to deviously tricky if/then concatenations.
Good for kids anywhere from 7 to 17, I'd say.

My wife tells me this book is good

My wife wanted me to get these and I have no idea what they're about. I mean I do, they're about doing math with words. Like for instance, I think the first problem was 'ELF+ELF = FOOL'. I have no idea what that means. However, my wife is happy with the book so whatever. I hate math.
