This is the first book to give such close attention to Le Corbusier's approach to the making of buildings. It illustrates the ways in which Le Corbusier's details were expressive of his overall philosophical intentions. It is not a construction book in the usual sense- rather it focusses on the meaning of detail, on the ways in which detail informs the overall architectural narrative of a building. Well illustrated and containing several specially prepared scaled drawings it acts as timely reminder to both students and architects of the possibilities inherent in the most small scale tectonic gestures.

A book that makes architecture details exciting!?!?
2011年6月19日に英国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I bought this book recently for my postgraduate architecture course (Part 2) and it was more than I could have hoped for. There are three kinds of architecture books; the type that is informative yet dry, the sexy type that sits on a coffee table, and the type that makes the subject matter informative and exciting simultaneously.
I never thought I'd get excited about architecture details; until I read this. The book is successful because it includes the development of details that Corbusier used . It highlights things that are probably only noticeable when you're actually in one of the buildings (the way the windows open, the door handles, the quirky little tactile details that make a building into an experience).
Basically it's like going on a tour around some Le Corb buildings with an enthusiast who knows every nook and cranny of the building and points out a detail and then tells it's story.
I think it's a good purchase for an architecture student (it was handed around with much interest in the studio) or for an architect. It's not too heavily opinionated, it's more of a curated collection of details that reveal the architects intent. It made me rethink the image I had of Le Corb from the minimalist and bare photos that are so commonly found of his work, this shows the more human, touchable qualities, that alone, are delightful.

Intelligent but not worth $55

This book is about the meaning of detail in LeCorbusiers work. It is not a book about the details of the detail in his work. The thesis and the essay as a whole by the author is deserving, educational, and informative.
However, in my judgement, the merits of the effort are scarred by the high price compared to the physical reality of the book. First, the book has eight color photographs of "details". These are all on the front and back cover. The inside paper is lightweight, the b&w photographs are a washed out grey and grainy. The drawings supplied by the author are rarely more than diagrammatic. They do not explain how the physical mechanics of how these details come together. To be fair, that's not the authors thesis. Her thesis is the meaning of the details.
I'd like to have this book in my library. Yet, upon principle, I just can't pay $55 dollars for it - $30 max. It disappoints me to return it, but that is exactly what I'm doing.
