Deborah Rodriguez spent five years teaching and later directing the Kabul Beauty School, the first
modern beauty academy and training salon in Afghanistan. She also owned the Oasis Salon and the Cabul Coffee House, and is the founder of the nonprofit organisation Oasis Rescue, which aims to teach women in post-conflict and disaster-stricken areas the art of hairdressing.

著者の Deborah Rodoriguez はアメリカで災害救助のNGO活動にもとりくむ美容師だったが、9/11 のあと、医師たちの派遣に加わってアフガニスタンに渡り、そこで美容学校を開き、現地の女性たちと交流し、その記録を 'Kabul Beauty School' に著している。
本書は彼女の最初のフィクションであるが、6年間にわたる体験に基づいて、現在のアフガニスタンの状況を実に生き生きと描いている。
Khaled Hosseini の'Kite Runner' をはじめとする3作はそれぞれにアフガニスタンの実情を描いて衝撃的であったが、本作は別の角度からまさにアフガニスタンの「今」を知ることができる。今、この国はこんな状況なのだということが、驚きと悲しみをもって、しかしそこに暮らす人たちの温かさも含めて、伝わってくる。
カブールでコーヒーハウスを経営するアメリカ人女性 Sunny を中心に様々な人たちの物語が紡がれる。店で働くアフガニスタン人の男性、オーナーの老女とその秘めた恋、イスラムの伝統に固執する息子、売られる途中で妊娠がわかり放り出されて、保護され、店で働くことになった女の子、店に出入りするアメリカ人の政府機関で働く男性たちと Sunny とのかかわり、ロンドンから派遣されている女性ジャーナリスト、タリバンのテロリストに利用される富豪のアメリカ人女性・・・・。
今なおイスラムの厳しい戒律のもとに虐げられている女性たちの実態は驚くばかりである。
アメリカの侵攻、カルザイ政権下の不安定な政情、タリバンの復活など、いつまでも落ち着かないアフガニスタンで暮らす人々。
空爆や自爆テロのもようなどもありありと描かれている。その中でも他を思いやる温かな心、苦境に立ち向かっていくようす、コーヒーハウスで働いたり、そこに集う人々を通して知ることのできるアフガニスタンの文化、などが伺える。
アメリカ人の視点から描かれている物語、個人の善意がどこまで本質に迫れるのか、また結末的にはあまりにハッピーエンドに急いだのでは、などの疑問も残ったが、アフガニスタンの実情を知ることのできる良書、英語も読みやすく、お薦めです。
