New in Paper
An inside look at the 2003 Tour de France through the eyes of Lance Armstrong's right-hand rider, Victor Hugo Peña--who also helped Armstrong ride to his unprecedented sixth victory in 2004. Peña served as Armstrong's domestique, a crucial yet unsung position unique to cycling. The domestique handles a variety of tasks, but his most important is to ride ahead of the team leader, creating a wind tunnel that makes it aerodynamically easier for the "star" to continue pedaling. This is the essence of cycling, and the key to Armstrong's victories. Now, in revealing the true role of the domestique for the first time, Matt Rendell gives a more vivid and insightful portrayal of professional cycling than ever before.

著者について
MATT RENDELL survived Hodgkin's Disease and lecturing at British and Latvian universities before entering TV and print journalism. His first book Kings of the Mountains: How Colombia's Cycling Heroes Changed their Nation's History (Aurum Press 2002) was described in The Times as 'meticulous, elegant and sensitive.' His Channel 4 documentary about sport in Colombia and Ecuador, also called Kings of the Mountains, was described in The Observer as 'a gem, telling us more about the essence of sport in under an hour than a season's worth of Premiership matches.' He has written for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, including British coverage of the Tour de France, and he edited The Tour de France Centennial 1903-2003 (Weidenfeld and Nicolson 2003). The National Sporting Club named Matt Rendell 'Best New Sports Writer 2003'.

a significant cycling book.

not only a great portrait of an exceptional rider, but also a very comprehensive overview of the Tour de France's history, as well as a guide for understanding a lot of what happens on the bike and inside a race peloton. Rendell is a very powerful storyteller. another great cycling book to be read many times over the years.

The Tour de France from a unique perspective
2010年11月30日に英国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
What sets this excellent book apart from hundreds of others written about the Tour de France is it's unique perspective, being in the main Victor Hugo Pena's account of his ride in support of Lance Armstrong at the 2003 edition of cycling's biggest race. Whilst Matt Rendell also takes the time to ponder different elements of bike racing's place in the world at large, the great draw of this tome (probably not an entirely appropriate word to use as the book reads really quickly and can be difficult to put down) for cycling fans is "hearing" the thought process of the "Domestique" as he gives his all for 3 weeks in pursuit of overall victory for his team leader in this great race. The pain and suffering, laughter and tears are all brilliantly described and bring humble everyday cyclists closer to understanding the true nature and of life in the pro Peloton.
Highly recommended, this account belongs in the "essential purchase" section of cycling books.

Below expectations

The scattered brief account throughout the boook by Victor Hugo Peña is very good, but that is about 30% of the book. The rest is crammed with information and the history of the Tour which goes on and on, which is nothing to do with Armstrong.

The good is very good, the bad is tedious.

The part of this book about Victor Hugo Pena and the Tour for this year is exceptional. It provides tremendous insight as to the amazing physical ability of Pena, who was participating as a domestique, although he was a champion cyclist himself.
Victor's description of the pain during the time trial is classic. I may put that paragraph on my training room wall.
However when the author goes into detail on the TDF route over the years, it becomes tedious and for me, meaningless. Who cares how many times the TDF went through village X?
Then we get an interpretation of the tour and the history of France (if not all mankind) which lost me early on. Maybe these chapters should have been in another book.
In summary, I'm glad I read the book. The good outweighed the "not so interesting" part.

Another Fantastic Work by one of the Most Underappreciated Authors to cover Pro Cycling

Fantastic! (full review at later date)
Rendell really is an amazing writer. It's too bad his work wasn't in a more lucrative and high-profile field, however, since I can't help but feel that he's underappreciated and has toiled in relative obscurity.
