Scarred for life by a brutal father, Joe Trona found a safe haven and a loving childhood in the home of the couple who adopted him. Now he spends his days as a deputy for the Orange County sheriff's department and his nights as a driver and aide to Will Trona, the influential politician who rescued him from the Hillside Children's Home. An expert in firearms and the martial arts, Joe has been backing Will up for a long time. Still, his skill isn't enough to keep Will alive, and when his father is killed right in front of Joe's eyes, the young deputy vows to avenge him. But first he must find out how the kidnapping of a tycoon's daughter, a scam to line the pockets of Will Trona's political enemies, the murder of two Guatemalan immigrants, the unholy activities of a charismatic minister who's a close friend of the Trona family, and the strange alliance of two rival L.A. gangs are connected to Will's death. Every secret Joe uncovers leads deeper into his beloved father's murky past and ultimately his own. But the reader stays right with this extraordinary man as he battles his demons and ultimately vanquishes them. Author T. Jefferson Parker (The Blue Hour, Red Light, Laguna Heat) is one of the best thriller writers working today. Fans of Michael Connelly and DennisLehane--and Raymond Chandler, for that matter--will appreciate Parker's abilityto create a complex, fascinating, and fully realized hero whose inner reality is brilliantly revealed by his actions. Will Trona is an equally intriguing invention; while ultimately he is an enigma, we remain convinced that he is worthy of his son's devotion. Silent Joe is a mindful, intelligent novel you can't put down. It should break Parker out withthe really big boys of mystery fiction, the million-sellers with the marquee names. In fact, he's a much better writer than most of them, and unlike many, he never tells the same story twice. --Jane Adams

Great story, SLOPPPPPPPPY editing & typos!
Here's the deal on my rating.....5 stars for content, story line,
character development, all that! 1 star for editing, typos, what
a mess. I so wanted to give this a 1 star rating, but I couldn't
bring myself to do it, just for the editing. We're not in college
where every thing counts. This review is just that, a review, as
well as a personal observation about his main characters (based on
newspaper accounts).
I like everything this guy writes & this story, while long (too
long for me), is no exception. I'm not done with it yet, but I'll
finish it) had SO many typos & poor editing, just plain SLOPPPPY!
What in the world was up with that?
Main character was sure different than any I've see in any novel.
Author gets a big attaboy for developing the kind or protagonist
he did. Very unusual main character. There were moments how-
ever, when the main character didn't seem entirely real. I have
a hunch that's what Parker intended. The story is otherwise too
well crafted to intentionally develop the kind of character he did.
I live not far from the site of action, Orange County, CA., & he
got that right. He essentially mixed truth with some fantasy.
Some of the events he refers to actually did take place, he just
changed the names. I find it interesting & telling, at least for
me personally, that he had as much assistance as he did from the
former Sheriff-Coroner of Orange County, California, Mike Carona.
That just blew me away. He seems to have paid homage to him by
naming Will & Joe with the last name of Trona (Will being a sub
character & Joe being the main character in this story). It just
goes to show you, some times good people turn bad & still main-
tain positive & motivating characteristics. Poor guy sure got
lots of really bad press, so I saw a different side of the
former Sheriff. Says something about the way Parker sees people;
I'll give him credit for that as well, since he was able to
obscure my negative view of Mr. Carona.
So far, this is a teriffic read & I absolutely recommend anything
Parker writes. I read last night until 3:30 AM & it sure messed
up my day today, slept till 11 AM. No more of that!
Just get a good proof reader/editor, use spell check, do some
thing about the sloppy editing; it truly takes away from an
otherwise good read.

Unusual crime story
For me this was one of those books that you don't want to end, it's an unusual story and very well written. Set in and around LA the main character, Joe, has a badly scarred face after an acid attack as a baby. This gives the whole thing an unusual twist as his emotions and life are revealed. The book would have been good enough without this but it adds to the story of corruption and shady dealing that Joe tries to unravel. If you like Connelly and Crais then you'll love this. This was my first T. Jefferson Parker book and it won't be my last.

Good book, but with a lot of editing errors
I loved this book. The story was great, complicated and well written. What I did not like was the e-reader edition editing...there were a lot of misprints (wolf for wife, for example), sometimes the same misprint several times on the same page. There was also a lot of missing punctuation. These editing errors can be very distracting, and I never see a print book with this many. It seems to be an issue with some older books that are converted for e-reader use. I could figure out the error from context, but why should I have to? I would have given it 5 stars if the editing were better.
