I love this book. I work part time at home due to covd and had trouble adjusting to intenet issues with laptop. This book explains exactly what each aspect of internet tranmissions. For a big book it was reasonable price.

I have used this book on multiple occasions as a textbook to teach colleagues about the internet. Yes it is simple in it's presentation - that is precisely the point. It is ideal for the person who has only been a consumer of web pages (which describes most people), and now needs to crawl under the hood as part of their job. They have to start somewhere that is simple, understandable, consumable and rememberable. This book does the trick.

5つ星のうち4.0 Good introductory book to the workings of the internet, BUT...

Could use an update. Things like 'How Blackberrys deliver email' should be dropped in favor of more relevant technology. Something like, 'How Iphones deliver email' would be good, for starters. And while there is an explanation for 'how online shopping works', why isn't there an explanation about how the underlying technology works? For example, how does HTTPS and SSL work? Similarly, while there is a discussion on the FTP protocol, BUT, for the most part, simple FTP has fallen out of favor for more secure protocols, such as Secure FTP or SFTP. Additional suggestions include - how 5g works, how cable modem/fiber and other broadband connections work and a comparison of all of the relevant broadband technology would be useful. How apps work would also be a useful addition.
To be fair, much of contents of this book is still relevant, the quality/production values are excellent, excellent graphics, it has good, introductory information. VPN, for example, is discussed, It contains good explanations on various threats, but here again, there are things that should be added/updated, such as a discussion on ransomware, for example.
My advice would be that if you are looking for a good introduction to the workings of the internet, this is a pretty good, (but not great) choice and the contents/quality, as I've mentioned are rock solid, for its time. Perhaps the author intends to release a revision, but for right now, it's likely that there are similar publications that are available that are more up to date than this one.
