"Perry [has two] strengths: memorable characters and an ability to evoke the Victorian era with the finely wrought detail of a miniaturist."
--The Wall Street Journal
Nurse Hester Latterly finds herself well-suited for the position: accompany Mrs. Mary Farraline, an elderly Scottish lady with delicate health, on a short train trip to London. Yet Hester's simple job takes a grave turn when the woman dies during the night. And when a postmortem examination of the body reveals a lethal dose of medicine, Hester is charged with murder--punishable by execution.
The notorious case presents detective William Monk with a daunting task: find a calculating killer amongst the prominent and coolly unassailable Farraline clan. Since Hester must be tried in Edinburgh, where prejudice against her runs high, there is little that the highly skilled barrister Oliver Rathbone can do to help. He can only try to direct her Scottish lawyer from the frustrating sidelines, and pray that Hester will not be sent to the gallows....
"When it comes to the Victorian mystery, Anne Perry has proved that nobody does it better."

This particular Anne Perry is my most favorite of all her books. What made this book most fun for me is that having worked for many years as Anne's publicist, she decided to base a character in this book on me. So it was fun to read the book and try to figure out exactly which character I was. I also enjoyed this particular Perry book as the two main characters, Monk and Hester, finally make some headway in their relationship -- a question that Perry fans constantly ask is when and if Monk and Hester will get together.

A really brilliant author and series of books.

I believe that this is the book I have enjoyed most in the series so far, but then I can say that about the previous four books I have read by Anne Perry. It is not full of blood and gore, but it has something more. The author builds the story slowly and carefully, bringing each character into play very sympathetically. I am please that William and Hester have gotten to an understanding in their love hate relationship, it will be interesting to see if it develops further and the relationship between Oliver and Hester becomes clearer. I enjoy these books as the stories although similar are also completely different. I always finish a book with mixed feels = Sorry that I have come to the end of an investigation and trial, BUT also looking forward to reading the next in the William Monk series. I would recommend this series and this author for a good who really done it. Just about to start Cain this brother (book 6).

Ann Perry: The Sins of the Wolf.

This is pleasant reading. We get to know the characters well, the plot is interesting, and, in a sense, the book is an another re-print of an earlier English popular detective story, in this case admittedly, only 15 years old.
It is also beautifully written, full of surprises, and deeply psychological. I know that there are many titles related to William Monk, who, with his past, is a mystery to the reader and to himself.
It is clear that Hester is in love with him, and, apparently, she will later marry him. One feels like warning her, because a difficult man would never become easy to live with and she will have to shed many a tear.
I will definitely return to other titles from the Monk series. It is such nice, peaceful reading, in spite of all the crime and betrayal.
I have only one additional remark. The series is taking place in Victorian times, and one would like to have some more information about the law at the time. I learned in this book about Scottish law, but how long would HABEAS CORPUS allow a person to be held in prison without a trial? As we get further and further from the times of the plot, it would be welcome (in all historical novels) to add some short information for the reader about the pertinent issues.

Perry's Victorian ambiance

No one does Victorian ambiance better than Anne Perry. Her mise-en-scene is perfect; her characters well and thoroughly developed; her storylines always clear and often surprising. The early Victorian underworld in the Monk series is baldly presented to clarify the strict sociatal limits that existed in that era. Perry has specific "causes" that she espouses in her work, i.e.: the broad mores that separated men's rights from women's rights, the abysmal treatmeant of women and how easily they could lose their "virtue" and be tossed aside in a society that was unquestionably patriarchal and strict but all too forgiving of men's mistakes and roughness, the arrogance, insensitivity, and sense of entitlement of the upper classes, "acceptable" shady business practices and the social havoc they cause, the need for better medical care especially in recognizing the role of nurses taught to care and treat and not merely empty the slops and scrub the floors and then receive pay in "porter" rather than coin, perpetuating the lowly lives and disdain heaped upon them. The plight of the poor and of women is front and center in all Perry's work. She also very bravely takes on the sex trades and their destruction of humanity, all of which is primarily wrapped up in the priorities of the upper classes. Injustices of all kinds find airing in Perry's Victorian mysteries. Perry is always a good read.

William Monk

When Hester Latterly is hired to accompany an Edinburgh woman to London and the woman dies in the night, Hester is first charged with theft and then murder. How Hester, Monk, Oliver Rathbone, his father, Henry Rathbone and Lady Callandra Daviot all work to clear Hesters name and discover the real killer makes for a great addition to this series. I was totally drawn into this story and had a hard time reading about Hester facing a murder charge because of how attached to these characters I have become. The ending was fascinating and really kept me reading quickly to see what happened. Highly recommend this book and the series.
