Aircraft: The Jet as Art ハードカバー – 2007/5/1

Jeffrey Milstein
(著)
Sometimes it takes an artist to show us that familiar things are truly remarkable. Jeffrey Milstein's elegant photographs of commercial airliners restore the rigor and glamour to our experience of air travel. They have quickly become contemporary icons, published in 2005 in photo magazine, "Graphis PhotoAnnual", and "American Photography Annual", and winning first place in the PDN Digital Photography Contest. For the past five years, Milstein has been taking meticulous large-format photographs of commercial airliners as they take off and land, revealing the beauty and power of these sleek but complex machines. An eloquent foreword by Walter J. Boyne helps the reader appreciate these amazing technological wonders, with their incredibly powerful engines that "run for so many thousands of hours that they are more vulnerable to rust than to wear" and lifters "that unfold like a steel origami bird before your very eyes." The book gives technical data on each airplane pictured.

A brilliant intersection of art and technology

A brilliant intersection of art and technology. Milstein photogtaphs the underbelly (literally) of our commercial aviation fleet, reveals its beauty, its power, and the unseen side of a lot of fancy jets. It provokes thought as to who we are as a society and sheds light on the craft of the designers whose names are never known.

Wonderful book, does what it says on the cover.

This is an absolutely outstanding book for folk who like Aircraft, photography, engineering, anorak detail and high quality printing.
Every page is a stunner, the images are sharp, the aircraft are all photographed in an identical way and the images speak for themselves. These are views of commercial aircraft as they come in to land that have had the sky, or other distracting details, removed to allow the viewer to focus on the plane itself. The front cover is an excellent example of the images contained in the book.
There is very little written info, but then this is not a technical manual. Fact lovers need to look elsewhere.
A great book!

Nice Coffee Table Book

You really have to be a plane person to fully appreciate this book. But even a casual observer will notice the quality that is put into the volume both in the photography and the book itself. It left me wishing there was more and I mean that in a positive sense.

Simply Brilliant

As both an amateur photographer and an aviation enthusiast I found this book simply wonderful.
The clarity of image achieved by striping away the background allows you to look at the aircraft not only as technical objects but as works of art.
I thoroughly recommend this book.

I got really irritated reading all the negative reviews for this book because had these people done any research prior to buying, they would know that Jeffrey Milstein is an ARTIST not just some photographer with a airplane fetish. If you are obsessed with airplanes & are looking for a documentation of the artwork/graphic designs on aircrafts or mechanical aspects of these planes, then no, this is not the book for you. If you are the kind of person who does not understand how Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup can was art, then you should probably avoid buying art books all together. May the Lord help you!
The book, like the title points out, is a series of images illustrating the art in the body/shape/form of an aircraft. Most pics are beautifully shot silhouettes showing the underside of many planes, a view that one rarely sees or appreciates when boarding, flying in, or watching a plane. It is really a lovely series, especially if you like Jeffrey's work.
