4.9 5つ星のうち4.9 19個の評価

This is the most useful and comprehensive English-Tahitian, Tahitian-English dictionary available. The author, who was a devoted student of Tahitian for more than three decades, provides an extensive introduction to the language with detailed notes on grammar, usage, and pronunciation.

This reprint edition has been re-sized to 6 inches x 9.25 inches, making it a convenient and handier alternative to larger-sized dictionaries.

Fantastic dictionary. There are example phrases and sentences for many words. I have never seen this in a dictionary. One of the best Tahitian English dictionaries. Modern vernacular included.

This dictionary is very well laid out and it's easy to look up words as the printing is clear. I would highly recommend this dictionary as it may be the best so far.

Very few resources for learning Tahitian from English. This is a brilliant work with a good way of bringing across the flexibility inherent in meaning between the two languages, while also having a brief but very useful introduction for pronunciation, word order etc. Truly a labour of love for which all we can all be grateful.

Combine this with D T Tryon's "Conversational Tahitian" from the ANU Press (sadly out of print, as far as I know) for a good resource.

5つ星のうち5.0 A MUST buy - best modern Tahitian-English dictionary out there

Best Tahitian-English dictionary out there. I bought this after my last trip in 2011 and wish I had found it sooner. My dad is Tahitian and I've been trying to learn to read and write a bit more as I mostly learned French while living in Tahiti as a teen. I currently speak fluent English and French, decent Japanese, and can survive in Tahitian, albeit difficultly. It's sad to think Tahitian is dying (even my Tahitian cousins speak less and less) so I'm hoping to help keep it alive. I bought a different dictionary while in Tahiti and this one is easier to read and much more current. The other one was made in the 1800's and is maybe more useful if reading older material or learning more "pure" Tahitian (not commonly spoken as much these days). This one is a lot better for learning how Tahitian is commonly spoken today and includes lots of common slang. The dictionary is pretty thick, but the English-Tahitian part is about 10 times bigger than the Tahitian-English part. Many English words are translated into Tahitian by combining multiple simpler Tahitian words. For example, horse is pua'ahorofenua -> beast(pua'a) run(horo) land(fenua). Another example is afatateata is TV -> box(afata) theater(teata). As a result, the English-Tahitian part is almost 10 times the size of the Tahitian-English part because there are many more words in English than there are in Tahitian. The up side to this is that you can often "make" words when you're not sure how to say them. Even if it sounds weird, Tahitians will get a crack out of you trying and will most likely understand what you're trying to say. There's also a brief grammar guide in the beginning that is pretty good. If you have any interest in learning Tahitian, this dictionary is a must and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. Fa'aitoito!

P.S. This should not cost hundreds of dollars like some sellers are trying to sell for. I think the MSRP is around $65 (Update: unfortunately it seems like $100 has become the norm for this dictionary, maybe low supply?.)
