Good lord. The first part of this book consists mainly of footnotes contradicting most of what ol' Ranald wrote, which apparently was mostly 'in error'. I wonder how much of the rest of the book is truthful. I think not much, if you can believe the footnoters. This is not an easy read - there'll be a paragraph, then 3/4ths of the page taken up by footnotes. Trying to follow the narrative so far has been frustrating. I hope it gets better, but I'm on page 111 and don't know if I can continue with this disjointed style of book.
Update: Ok, finished reading most of it. This might have been fine as a short story. Endless footnoting does not constitute a book, or good reading. It's not a terribly exciting tale anyhow, and is best viewed as purely an amateur account of personal experience. He taught a few Japanese English, they treated him well and with respect, and shipped him out the first chance they got. End of story.
