The origins and secrets of the Grateful Dead's magical sound are told! This book is the first in-depth examination of the Dead's technical side, including their recording methods. From the “Acid Tests” of the mid-'60s to the famous “Wall of Sound” PA setup in the '70s and on to their exceptional later touring systems, the Grateful Dead were always on the cutting edge of technological innovation and experimentation. This exhaustive study includes clear and concise explanations of the band's equipment technology, instrument design, and studio recording techniques, plus a history of the group. Features: more than 100 photos and diagrams, many never before seen; new interviews with band members and tech personnel; suggested listening for every era of the group's history; and more!

Good, but could have been that little bit better.

A little bit of a mixed bag. For the most part this is very good, full of good pictures (& nice quality paper) and interesting information.
The main downside (for me, and I'm guessing I wont be far from the target audience of this book) is the balance between the different `gear'. I found there to be too much time spent on the bands evolving PA system, too much talk of how many speakers, crossovers, power amps etc... Ok for a little while but, for me, it got to be too much. On the flip side I could have done with a little more about the guitars & effects used by the band. Some of this is skimmed over quite quickly, with some of the guitars used not getting any pictures, just a quick mention in the text. Also it would have been nice to see more pictures and more detailed pictures of some of Garcias classic guitars as these are such a major part of the `Grateful Dead' image and sound.
Overall pretty nice, I would say 3½ stars. A good read but it could have been balanced a little differently for my taste. Of course, if you are really interested in the development of live band amplification you will get a lot out of it. Nicely written though and even the technical stuff doesn't bog you down too much.

Print On Demand! But Get it Any Ways!

I'm gonna revise this from 1 star to 5 star as I don't think the publishers poor printing should reflect Blair Jacksons hard work and amazing volume.
Despite any misgivings of less than perfect print quality ALL the information is HERE! If you want to dive into the nuts and bolts of the Grateful Dead's sonic landscapes there this one and only volume and should be part of your library!
I contacted Hal Leonard/Backbeat Books about the poor quality of the printings and they confirmed they licensed a company to print on demand.
So you WILL NOT get the version in the preview. It's black and white printing with gray scale photos that are washed out and blurry at best. No color at all! BUT it's very readable and should last quite a while.
Amazon should have this noted as it's been a few years. it should be cheaper too! It's the same price as the "new" real copies were.
No band had a bigger impact of live sound NONE! and the instrument histories and sound systems are of historical value. To take Blair Jacksons work and give it a half hearted effort is an insult!

Information-packed, enjoyable and very readable book

I have to say when I got the book I was less than thrilled about its overall quality (for instance, no color pictures, and really a lower standard of paper/cover quality. BUT - there's a big BUT here - once I started reading it I was hooked. the author has really done his homework, and his writing style really pulls the reader along.
This is truly a case of "you can't judge a book by its cover." Is it as glossy, and deluxe as similar items (like my friend Andy Babiuk's "Beatles Gear" and "Rolling Stones Gear" books? Nope. But it has a tremendous amount of interesting and valuable information within...and that's really why we read books, right?
I gave this four stars just because of the aforementioned physical quality issues - but would have probably given it 4.5 stars if that was an option. This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in how the Dead produced all those wonderful sounds over the 3 decades of their existence.
Highly Recommended!

Absolutely the best book if you want to know about the journey this group was on to get the best sound ever. To the very end they were looking searching for the best sound. Now this book is not for everyone it goes into details of not only the equipment used but the history of each and every company that made it. It goes without saying that first anf foremost you can have the greatest equipment but if you lack the talent to play it it would be for nothing. The Grateful Dead are foremost musicians that are madly in love of not only music but in love with those that come to listen. With this in mind they searched for the means to deliver this music even if it ment building it themselves, which they did at times. They spent most of the money they made on getting this sound. This book starts from the beginning and goes through each year not only the live sound but the studio as well. Now if you are looking for a book about the Grateful Dead you might be better off picking up a number of the others that have been written. I have them all Phil's is a great one "Searching for the Sound" look on Amazon they have them all. I'm a drummer who loves to read Guitar Player & Keyboard Player magazines because they go into details about how and what goes into making the music this book does that about the Grateful Dead. It was great the be reading the book while listening to music of that time. There is suggestive listening through the book in each chapter which was helpful. These guys were very serious when it comes to their music and in this book you see just how serious they still are. I learned so much from this book but then that's me I love knowing all the little details and this book is loaded with details.
