Lots to like
2014年10月28日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This retrospective really does have a lot to like, so let's start there. For me, the figure photography truly stands out. He's found some models of uncommon comeliness, and taken the time to make the most of each one's uniqueness. I couldn't help notice that some few of them come adorned by nature with moles or freckles. I have to admit a special fondness for that kind of built-in decor, and enjoy tracing out the constellations measured off across her lovely person. And, I also enjoyed a series that flirted with androgyny: faces tending toward gender ambiguity atop figure distinctly womanly. But, with models so slim, even those curves could be minimized with the right clothes. I like that celebration of human variety, and applaud any collection that works the gradations between dichotomous super-femmy and uber-macho, a false if popular dichotomy. That takes nothing away from the wide sections of this book that also make use of very feminine beauty. This includes a few attempts at showing male beauty as well. I found them unsuccessful, but can't certainly say whether the failure was in his presentation or in my viewing of it.
Rankinologists (and I'm not one) might appreciate selections of his work from student days onward, to see his progression in style, technique, and subject matter. I found some of the portrait quite evocative, and was surprised to recognize Mick Jagger, U2, Marilyn Manson (?), and other notables in that part of the collection. I have to admit, though, the evocative and the famous rarely appeared in the same photos. And I admit, too, that the fashion photography does little for me, and a fair bit of fashion photography appears here.
The one thing I found truly maddening was complete lack of information about the who, where, and when of each photo. At least the year and many location of each one would make sense in a retrospective like this. Likewise the names of the models - I always feel something missing when I don't have a name for each subject, and that lack becomes most frustrating when a model reappears in different contexts, or when it's a "famous" person that I almost (but don't) recognize. And, most of all, I hoped for more along the lines of that humorous, sensual, quirky, and very enticing cover image - but that hope was never fulfilled.
So, as with any lengthy collection, I found some things to like and others to like less.On the whole, though, the "likes" could have done better among the many "like less" specimens. Despite high points, I can't call this a favorite.

Eine Ausstellung vergeht - ein Buch niemals
