Elgort's Models Manual is an eclectic mix of layouts and spreads covering work from the 1970's to the early years of the super model. Its size is perfect for the title of 'manual'. It is one of those rare books that will always be consulted and leafed through for both inspiration and to get lost in. For me one of the opening quotes by Linda Evangelista on starting at the 'bottom' because she 'didn't think you could just start at the top' sets the tone and vision of this book which so expertly celebrates and covers the dimension of working and photographing in the modeling world.

'quirky' book capturing the 90s and earlier models
2023年10月27日に英国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This is less a manual and more a scrapbook or magazine style book, consisting of interviews with various models and 'behind the scenes' people in fashion (designers, agents, stylists). But it's mainly Elgort's thoughts overall.
Models represented include: Linda Evangelista, Helena Christensen, Tatjana Patiz, Cindy Crawford, Shalom Harlow, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Carmen. Lots more models are featured than this (either via picture or with a little interview as well).
Its quirky design is both a selling point and its downfall. Whilst it gives the book an interesting feel, it's also quite chaotic and at times the text is really difficult to read due to the colours used (like black against a dark blue background!) and there are pages with random quotes on without attribution - I have guessed these must be elgort's thoughts, but who knows - are they the words of the model pictured on the opposite page for example?
There's no contents page and some photos are far too small to be appreciated. There's no date or reference (e.g. Vogue May 1990) for any of the pictures, so if you wanted to seek out more from the same shoot you'd be disappointed. Sometimes even the models aren't identified!
The 'dark' side of modelling isn't really touched upon either - there's one quote which in hindsight given what later happened to her is very sad, from Karen Mulder that says she was sent home from her first lingerie shoot as she looked so scared. To be honest this is meant to be a lighthearted book and when it was published in 1993 people didn't discuss this stuff, but it does make you wonder. There's even a brief section on 'nudity' where some models talk about how it doesn't bother them at all and Elgort (?) says a 'great model is comfortable in her body without clothes' which again with hindsight feels perhaps not reflective!
The photos are a mix of editorial and behind the scenes and vary in quality - some are really stunning and to give Elgort credit everything feels very 'real' and authentic. And I also appreciate a focus on a broad range of models, some pre the supers in the 90s, others that were big then but now not well known, to give a good range to the selection.
If you are a bit obsessed with 90s and earlier models, and a fan of Elgort this is a good book. For me, it's a nice addition to the collection but not a 'must buy', but I'm happy with the price I picked it up for (I wouldn't pay what it's currently selling for on amazon at £50+!).
If you want more of a detailed look at modelling, I suggest getting David Bailey's 'models close up' which has much more insight via interviews with models and agents and editors etc.
To note the binding of this book appears to be rather poor, both my copy and other copies I've seen appear to have the glue holding in the pages dry out and detach, meaning segments of the book stick out further forward than the rest as they're not held securely into the binding. The pages aren't falling out as they're secured to each other but it's a shame this is happening.
