I purchased the book in preparation of a walking tour "In the Footsteps of Jane Austen", which I am planning for September 2014.
On first reading, it seemed quite satisfactory, apart from the maps, which are sketchy and far from clear.
I particularly liked the close association between Jane Austen's life and work and the details of each walk.
However, further preparations, and drawing information from the internet and other books, revealed several inadequacies.
For example: 1, Being written in 1991, even the 2006 Third Printing which I bought, could not possibly have contained the important news of the 2011 and 2012 of "Remains of Jane Austen's Steventon home (having been) unearthed" (BBC News).
2. On the area map on Page 42, Oakley Hall still appears as "Hilsea College", even though it was restored in 2003 to its original glory and has been used as a luxury hotel ever since.
3. The treatment of Lyme Regis is quite insufficient. It touches only upon its connections with Jane Austen, but fails to mention that "The town is noted for the fossils found in the cliffs and beaches, which are part of the Heritage Coast—known commercially as the Jurassic Coast—a World Heritage Site." (Wikipedia)
These were but three examples of those I have noticed. I imagine the actual visit in September will reveal further inadequacies.
However, all said and done, Anne-Marie Edwards' book is still the best single book of its kind, and an up-to-date revision of facts and maps would make it a truly 5 Star book.
