『How to write a lot』の著者であるPaul Silvia氏の本。先行書である『How to write a lot』の方がより全体的な完成度が高く読み物としても面白いと感じたのに対し、本書『Write it up』は、学術誌に投稿する論文の具体的な書き方に焦点を絞り込んでいるため、想定される読者層も絞り込まれている。本書は細かい記述が２００ページ以上にわたって書かれているが、著者の筆力のおかげで私はなんとか眠らずに通読できた。
私の印象に残った部分を以下に記し、意訳する。
Most open-access journals are, frankly, shady.
ほとんどのオープンアクセス学術誌は、あやしげな代物だ。
Research ideas are like Chinese restaurants: They’re everywhere, but only a few are any good.
研究のアイデアは、中華料理屋のようなものだ。そのほとんどがまずい。
Experienced writers plan resubmissions before their submissions.
経験を積んだ研究者は、投稿する前に再投稿のことまで考えている。
I learned nearly everything I know from reading books about writing. Surprisingly few professors and grad students read books about writing, and the quality of writing in the journals reflects it.
文章の書き方に関する本は、読んだ方が良い。
Don’t get trapped into false choices like, “If we don’t write formally then our articles will sound like middle-school diaries.” Imagine each dimension as a scale from +10 to -10, with 0 as the midpoint. As you learn to control your tone, you’ll find that you can slide along these scales at command. And you should---your tone should change on the basis of your purpose and your audience.
文章は、どのような読者を対象にするかによって書き分ける必要がある。
The tone of your writing is like timbre in music, and aspect of personality that readers discern in an instant. Your goal is to become versatile, to have control over your tone. A writer who can sound only one way is like a chef with only one good dish.
(ex. personal vs. impersonal; informal vs. formal; collaborative vs. combative; confident vs. defensive)
文章の書き方に関しては、いくつかの重要な要素がある。そして、それぞれの要素を、ラジオのボリュームを調節するツマミのように調節するのがポイントだ。具体的には、口語的vs.文語的、宥和的vs.戦闘的、自信たっぷりvs.控えめ、などだ。
<Introduction>
The Introduction is by far the hardest part of the paper to write---at least apatite or orthoclase on the Mohs Hardness Scale, an index of minerals in geology.
イントロダクションを書くことがいちばん難しい。イントロを書くことの「ハードさ」は、鉱物並みだ。
<レビュアー注 モース硬度とは、鉱物の硬さの尺度である。柔らかいものから硬い順に、滑石(talc)→石膏(gypsum)→方解石(calcite)→蛍石(fluorite)→燐灰石（apatite）→正長石（orthoclase feldspar）→石英(quartz)→黄玉(topaz)→鋼玉(corundum)→金剛石(diamond)と十段階に分類されている。>
<Methods>
Method sections are the easiest to write and the hardest to get wrong.
メソッドを書くのは簡単だ。
The goal is to describe the things that your readers want to know and to convince them that your approach was apt.
A Method section is always split into subsections with subheadings.
メソッドは、つねに複数の小見出しを用いて分割せよ。
Weaker procedures sections are descriptive: They list what the researchers did but fail to explain why they did it.
駄目なメソッドは、研究がどのように行われたのかを次々と述べるだけで、そうした理由を説明しない。
<Results>
The Results section should have less quantitative information than the usual paper: much more in the tables and figures, and less in the text.
文章ではなく、なるべく図表を使うべきだ。
When discussing your main findings, you should strive for a concise and logical structure.
主な研究データをディスカッションで扱う場合、簡潔さと論理性が重要だ。
Move from “central” to “peripheral: Present your most important findings first. Don’t build up to them in a dramatic crescendo like a mystery novel.
末梢的な内容を先に書いてはいけない。後半に近づくほど盛り上がるミステリ小説のマネをしてはダメだ。
Reporting every conceivable analysis of every last variable in the study is bad---less is more, more or less.
細々かいデータに至るまで、全てを述べる必要などない。簡潔を旨とすべし。
<Discussion>
A good Discussion has two qualities. First, it’s particular and specific, not generic. Second, a good Discussion focuses on the strengths of the research, not the weaknesses.
ディスカッションは、具体的であること、および研究の強みを強調するのがポイントだ。
Don’t say anything if you don’t have anything unique and insightful to say.
ユニークでもなければ洞察が深くもないようなことは、書いてはいけない。
<References>
Your references position your work, convey your sensibility as a researcher, and connect readers to your work. Unless the journal imposes a limit, don’t worry about having too many references.
レファレンスには、研究の位置づけ、研究者としてのセンスなどの情報が含まれている。また、レファレンスには読者を研究に結びつける役割もある。学術誌がレファレンスの数に制限を設けているのでない限り、レファレンスに入れる論文の多さを気にする必要はない。
<Titles>
These days, people are plugging keywords into a database, browsing lists of recent articles, or reading a journal’s table of contents. In all cases, people are implicitly looking for keywords that match their research interests, so your title should have slots for at least two keywords.
検索に引っかかりやすいタイトルをつけるべきだ。
<Abstracts>
Your abstracts should be one of the last things you write.
アブストラクトは最後に書くべし。
You need to cram all the relevant search terms and keywords into your abstract, even if the abstract’s style suffers somewhat.
検索に引っかかりそうな言葉を、アブストラクトに詰め込む必要がある。
<How to Revise>
There’s only one way to revise a paper: quickly.
論文の校正はすぐに行うべきだ。
Your resubmission letter is probably more important than your revised manuscript.
