I bought this book after seeing the
The Lord of the Rings
trilogy for my fifth time and realizing, like Gollum's precious, that I needed more.
The Lord of the Films: The Unofficial Guide to Tolkien's Middle-Earth on the Big Screen
is a quick and fun read brimming with movie trivia. While I enjoyed reading it, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed.
First, the good. If you love the movies, you'll probably learn a few interesting tidbits from
The Lord of the Films
. These range from bloopers to special effects to legal disputes behind the film. For example, even after watching all of the "making of" extras on the DVDs, I never realized that Kate Winslet and Sean Connery had been asked to be in the film (as Eowyn and Gandalf, respectively). Mercifully, they both said no, allowing us to enjoy the performances of Miranda Otto and Ian McKellan. The book is written for a wide range of audiences, so even diehard LOTR fans will probably learn something. It also includes some interesting interviews (including one with Zac the Orc) and trivia games at the end.
Unfortunately,
The Lord of the Films
is organized more like a factoid/trivia collection than a historical narrative of the film production. Each fact only receives a sentence or two. This is unfortunate, because some of the issues merit a longer discussion. I really would have enjoyed learning more about where and why the films departed from the book. Some of the changes in the movies work well. For example, I really like how the movie incorporates the Arwen-Aragorn love story from the Appendix. Other changes proved silly. For example, whose dumb idea was it to have Denethor jump off Gondor in flames in Return of the King (in the book, he dies in a funeral pyre)? While these are mentioned in
The Lord of the Films
, much more could have been discussed. I certainly understand how much of a challenge it must have been to fit all of this information into 220 pages. Nonetheless, if there is a revised edition, I think there is certainly some material that could be cut (such as the comments of moviegoers) to make more room for the more important issues.
Ultimately,
The Lord of the Films
is a fun factoid book about the film, but it isn't a definitive account of the making of the movies. That gap remains to be filled. The book is also not a substitute for watching the bonus features on the DVDs, which are actually quite interesting. However,
The Lord of the Films
is worth a quick read and would probably make a nice small Christmas gift for any LOTR fan.

First popularized in Tolkien’s classic and bestselling series, The Lord of The Rings has garnered millions of fans around the world. The stunning film trilogy by Peter Jackson was groundbreaking, beautiful, and, as expected, hugely successful. The Lord of the Films is a unique scene-by-scene guide to all of the Lord of the Rings movies, with lots of games, puzzles, and interviews with the filmmakers tossed in. In this book, each scene in each movie is tackled on four different fronts: a closer look at the plot and the action, a look behind the scenes, a reveal of mistakes that slipped through, and audiences’ reactions. In addition to the famous live-action trilogy, other related films (such as the animated adaptations) are covered as well. As an added bonus, the author reveals details about the prequel films currently in production and due out in theatres in 2011 and 2012, as well as a foreword by Cliff Broadway, a staff member of TheOneRing.net a member of the inner circle of those who worked on the films. After reading this book, fans will feel like they’re watching The Lord of the Rings for the first time all over again!

This is a fun read for those who are big fans of the Lord of the Rings movies. Some of it I knew already from the special features on the DVD's, but there are lots of tidbits I didn't know or didn't pick out. If you love know the story behind the story, then it's a great, fun read.

Any fan of `The Lord of the Rings' films by Peter Jackson, based on JRR Tolkien's novel, will be astonished by this exceptional book full of fascinating facts and interesting information. The stunning film trilogy was groundbreakingly beautiful, and as expected was hugely successful. This is a unique guide to the films with JW Braun, who observes in-detail each scene within each movie on four different fronts: a closer look at the plot and the action, behind-the-scenes exclusive information, mistakes that slipped through and our own reactions as an audience. In addition to the film trilogy, other Tolkien inspired films (such as the animation) are looked at in comparison. Added bonuses include ~ special revealed details about the prequel films in production (inc. The Hobbit) and out in theatres in 2011 & 2012. Interviews with cast and crew, fun games, puzzles and over 70 illustrations and photographs (although in black and white, note; not color), make this wonderful book something fans will cherish and treasure.
Reading this certainly made me feel compelled to re-watch the fellowship of the ring, the two towers and the return of the king again!
I absolutely love the cover of this lush book, which stands-out on the bookshelf. Exploring Hobbiton, Rivendell, Lothlórien and the end of all things was simply magical, highlighting how magnificent a story it is and the scope of Frodo's journey from Bag-End to Mordor. Creatures such as the creation of Gollum/ Sméagol are studied and how an actor (Andy Serkis) made a digitally animated character become so `real'. So many questions are answered in this book ~ from shooting in New Zealand, horse riding and Andalucian stallions to the building of Rohan and the Golden hall of Edoras, situated at the top of a mountain. The shimmering, authentic costumes, the different races of Elves, Ents and Wizards to the magic that is Middle-Earth and the languages of old this is a remarkable look at an epic creation.
Tolkien's works have been brought to life so that the people, places and adventures of the Fellowship of Friends (on the quest of a lifetime to destroy the One Ring), will always live in our hearts forever. Thank you JW Braun for re-living this memorable experience!

What I love about this book is how much fun it is to read - not dry at all - while at the same being very informative. Braun has somehow managed to capture every little detail you could ask for from The Lord of the Rings films and has ingeniously organized it to prevent readers from being overwhelmed. The photos, interviews, and illustrations (and games and puzzles and on and on) are all fun and well organized in their own right too. It's simply a great book all around.

Some very good info on why things were done or not done in filming. And I enjoyed the little movie goofs that were pointed out.
