The odyssey of an aging ex-supervillain.
2016年7月25日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
In 1995,writer Kurt Busiek, along with artists Brent Anderson and Alex Ross began "Astro City",a recurring anthology series centered around a major American city where superheroes and masked vigilantes, many of them variations on the archetypes created by the many superhero comic book publishers like DC and Marvel, serve and protect their city. Many of these stories are about the heroes themselves, but there are a few centered around seemingly ordinary citizens, many of whom whose lives have been touched by life in Astro City.
This volume centers around Carl Donewicz...also known as the supervillain "Steeljack",for his mantle of steel skin...recently released from a long prison sentence, now faces uncertainty as to how to face his autumn years. His metallic hide marking him by his former profession,he cannot find honest work or even escape the glare of a distrusting world. When he is asked to look into recent deaths in his rundown neighborhood, many of them of low-rent villains and aging thugs,Donewicz begins a journey that takes him face-to-face with a former masked hero whose career ended in disgrace, the initial clue to an insidious plot that might spell the destruction of his home,as well as the loss of his own life.
Artist Alex Ross gives the timeworn Steeljack a face more than a little reminiscent of the aging Robert Mitchum...that's just one of many charms to be found here, whether you're an Astro City fan or new to the series. With a fascinating introduction by writer/artist Frank Miller...a brief but incredible look at the near "death" of the comic book superhero...this is definitely a great read.

The art in Astro City is always beautiful and this story flows very well with a few twists and turns on the way. As always, the superheroics aren't the focus of the story, merely a backdrop for the more human stories of desperation and hope that are common to all.

Just amazing. Busiek and Anderson basically cast Robert Mitchum in the role of a lifetime, a steelplated henchman with a heart of gold, who may be the last hope for his city when genuine evil rears its ugly head. If you enjoy superhero comics but get bogged down in the confusing continuities and muddled motivations and endless cosmic crossover mega-stories, you'd do well to dive into Busiek's creator-owned universe. He moves around in time, switches points of view, kills off characters and keeps them dead (though sometimes they make brief time-travel related reappearances), all in the service of self-contained logical world-building. There's comedy, tragedy, and emotional stop off at all points in between. Just great stuff across the board.

Perhaps the best super-hero story ever.

Both my wife and I agree that as far a single self-contained story goes, Astro City: The Tarnished Angel is the best super-hero related graphic novel we've ever read.
P.S. We've read a lot.

Item sold as new; was not in new condition
2015年2月11日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
Item was described as new but had obviously been handled. Inside pages showed some blemishes and small tears left by fingertips and careless handling by a previous reader. The condition was very good, and the price was reasonable for the value received, but this should not have been described as being in new condition. I did enjoy the book and recommend it. Five stars for content, subtract two for misleading description.
