著者について

Meisei Goto fled North Korea during his adolescence and became a student of Russian Literature at Japan’s Waseda University. He is the prizewinning author of over thirty books, and remained in Japan until his death in 1999.

    トム・ギル（Tom Gill）

    フルネームはトマス・パラモア・ギル(Thomas Paramor Gill)

    (「トーマス」と呼ばれるのは嫌い。あれはドイツ語。英語は「トマス」）

    1960年英国生。ロンドン大学（LSE）博士（社会人類学）。京都文教大学人間学部文化人類学科（助手、１９９７～１９９９）、東京大学社会科学研究所（助教授、１９９９～２００３）、明治学院大学国際学部（助教授、２００３～２００６、教授、現在まで）。

    日雇い労働者、ドヤ街、ホームレス調査を経て、福島原発事故被災者調査へ。ここで見れる著書と別に、下記の学術論文もある：

    「シェルター文化の誕生――ホームレス自立支援法から２年間」（『明治学院大学国際学部付属研究所年報』第７号、2004）

I bought this book wondering what I was letting myself in for ["an intense stream of consciousness"]. It is not that entirely, as there a normal amount of dialogue. To my great pleasure, I found it easy to read and often quite entertaining as the hero recounts his fruitless search for a certain coat. I must mention the coat is one he wore twenty years before, an old army coat. He revisits the place where he used to live, talking to the people there, with anecdotes along the way about those he knew then and what happened to him in those years.

It is truly unfortunate that so few books by excellent Japanese authors ever make it into translation in English and publication in the US. This book was originally published in 1973, and did not appear here til 2008!
