著者について
Peter N. M. Hansteen is a consultant, writer, and sysadmin based in Bergen, Norway. A longtime Freenix advocate, Hansteen is a frequent lecturer on OpenBSD and FreeBSD topics, an occasional contributor to BSD Magazine, and the author of an often-slashdotted blog (http://bsdly.blogspot.com/).

This book is great for all types of OpenBSD users. If you just want a to build a home router with better performance and more control, then this book is all you'll need. If you're looking to build an enterprise load balancer, this book is an excellent resource that you'd be hard pressed to live with out.

Great book...

but it is dated. My mistake, I know. But the syntax of pf changed quite a bit, so that not all examples do work on OpenBSD 5+; luckily, the author has a great website helping out: [...]

I've read better written technical books

The author of this book is not in my opinion a natural instructor. I don't think it is particularly well written. I found the small section on PF in M. Lucas' Absolute BSD almost as useful. The book comprises 9 chapters: 1) introduction to PF; 2) simple setups; 3) network setups; 4) wireless networks; 5) DMZ and bridging; 6) proactive defence; 7) queues; 8) logging; and 9) fine tuning. If there were a ruleset reference at the back, it would be much more helpful.

Great Book for Middle of the Road N00bs

I like brevity so I am going to stick with it on my review. This book was easy to read and follow as the author progressed. Once or twice the author expected you to insert an external function to your rule set ([.]) without conjoining the location to the present example. However he did state that some functions were to be used as a base template which all I can think of was the *block all* rule...
Once I finished reading this book the only outstanding questions were learning the complete syntax definitions which can be found here:
