Virtualization and Forensics: A Digital Forensic Investigators Guide to Virtual Environments offers an in-depth view into the world of virtualized environments and the implications they have on forensic investigations. Named a 2011 Best Digital Forensics Book by InfoSec Reviews, this guide gives you the end-to-end knowledge needed to identify server, desktop, and portable virtual environments, including: VMware, Parallels, Microsoft, and Sun. It covers technological advances in virtualization tools, methods, and issues in digital forensic investigations, and explores trends and emerging technologies surrounding virtualization technology.
This book consists of three parts. Part I explains the process of virtualization and the different types of virtualized environments. Part II details how virtualization interacts with the basic forensic process, describing the methods used to find virtualization artifacts in dead and live environments as well as identifying the virtual activities that affect the examination process. Part III addresses advanced virtualization issues, such as the challenges of virtualized environments, cloud computing, and the future of virtualization.
This book will be a valuable resource for forensic investigators (corporate and law enforcement) and incident response professionals.

Virtualization and Forensics covers a wide variety of virualization tools, including all the common ones you've heard of and a couple you probably hadn't. It discusses how they work, what their differences are, how to know if they've been used, and how they store data. If your job requires you to do forensics even occasionally, you'll find this information useful. This section is inherently tool dependent (so it will go out of date at the same speed that the tools do, but the book goes beyond that. There is a good introductory section on the theory behind virtualization which describes the different methods. Once mastered, it should make it far easier to deal competently with any future virtualization tools that may appear, even if you don't have the convenience of the quick reference charts in this book. The last section of the book also talks about new challenges, regulatory concerns, and legal challenges that new developments like cloud computing and virtualization are bringing to the industry. The biggest weakness is that the book seems to be limited to a discussion of virtualization utilities, and doesn't really go into how to do a forensics investigation into them. The book constantly references best practices of data to collect, but doesn't tell you how to do that for the given virtual systems.
The material does assume some knowledge of forensics in non-virtual environments so if you are not familiar you might need to look some topics up. Overall, however, I thought it gave me a good idea on the topic and the complexity added by virtual environments.
Back in the days of "The Cuckoo's Egg" (1989), the early days of forensic investigations demonstrated how very difficult it was, even with simple computer platrforms and "primitive"(as compared to today's) networks. Nowadays, with many types of environments, programs, platfoms, networks and activities, Forensic Investigations online is a whole world (extremely daunting) unto itself-- one where the investigator needs to know what to do, where to look, how to look, and how to use the many necessary tools available to enhance and expedite this process.
"Virtualzation and Forensics" is not a book that any beginner wants to skim through -- the book is an "instruction manual" of the highest order -- it begins with easy to understand, highly descriptive basic information, then builds upon itself and finally leads the reader into a highly complex maze -- with the certainty that once one has "emerged" from this book, s/he WILL be equipped to handle this critical investigative work.
