Culture Map

An international business expert helps you understand and navigate cultural differences in this insightful and practical guide, perfect for both your work and personal life.
Americans precede anything negative with three nice comments; French, Dutch, Israelis, and Germans get straight to the point; Latin Americans and Asians are steeped in hierarchy; Scandinavians think the best boss is just one of the crowd. It's no surprise that when they try and talk to each other, chaos breaks out.
In The Culture Map, INSEAD professor Erin Meyer is your guide through this subtle, sometimes treacherous terrain in which people from starkly different backgrounds are expected to work harmoniously together. She provides a field-tested model for decoding how cultural differences impact international business, and combines a smart analytical framework with practical, actionable advice.

"Erin Meyer provides us with a brilliant guide to what all business leaders need to know right now: How to succeed in managing across the diverse cultural contexts of today's workplace!"―Marshall Goldsmith, author of the New York Times and global bestseller What Got You Here Won't Get You There
"Whether you are sitting at a desk in Boston or eating at a restaurant in Beijing, communicating across cultures is the great challenge of the global economy. It is rare that I pick up a cross-cultural book and can't put it down."―Cari Guittard, Huffington Post

Pretty interesting. Especially the part of how different cultures give feedback. I tried to place previous bosses in the map. I think it might help sometimes.

This book is really recommended to anyone who already has an ample experience working abroad or who is struggling and stressed to lead the team organized by variety of cultural backgrounds. For my case, this book deepens my understanding and gave me a holistic view of the culture gap and how it will affect to daily life. This book should give you insights that you may not be able to get only from your experience. Definitely recommended.

Useful, practical examples for working in a global workplace
This is a useful book if you work in a global workplace environment. It provides countless useful examples of actual stories and challenges faced by individuals in their companies, and tips on how to overcome said challenges. It covers a wide range of company types and locations, and interaction types between people from different regions.
The real practical, eye-opening information is through Erin's country mapping charts, where she plots (based on interviews and research) close to 20 different countries across 8 different factors that explain how these cultures build trust, communicate, collaborate, persuade, make decisions, etc. When you see the countries plotted out on these various scales, it leads to some quick "ah ha" moments that you can take back to your workplace and make minor tweaks in your approach that could make meaningful differences.
I was between 4-5 stars because I'd have loved more statistical analysis or other published research in some of these examples, to supplement the anecdotal examples. Overall, a brief, useful, and enjoyable read.
