I will leave the “impressions/feelings” of the story with the other readers. Instead of them, I would like to mention my analysis for the text
First, of the flamework, it can be comparable to the romantic story of medieval era. In the “Don Quixote “by Miguel de Cervantes, a knight who excessively read chivalric romance, strays around searching his ideal lover, Dulcinea, without success, for example. The ending of “The remains of the day” that Stevenson’s journey to bring her to the Darlington Hall to renew relationship with him is finally failed, has as a same structure as the Cervantes’s novel has.
Second, this book is may called a kind of fictional diaries. It is not important whether Stevens actually writes his dairy or not, what is important is his habit; after he arrives a hotel, finishes a dinner and retires into his bedroom, he customarily summarizes today’s events or sometime looks backs to the past. So, according to the first-person narrative, the story advances along with the time ordering; day one, day two, day three day four and so on. But strangely, day five is missing. Stevens meets Miss Kenton in his hotel in the evening of day four. They talk two hours, then, Stevens sends her to the bus station. This course is told at the evening of day six, in the scene on the pier. The memory of day five is completely erased from him. Therefore, what he was doing that day is permanently questioned, except the narrator gives us a modest hint of the Stevens’s emotion only one passage as the Stevens’s monologue; “at that moment, my heart was breaking”. We, readers must fill up the vacancy of the day five, by their own imagination.
Third, it has a special style in the novel, I say, “accumulating”. That means plural episode occurs at one time. I would like to refer the two events in which are the most crucial parties in the Darlington Hall, the one is an unofficial gathering of pro-German gentlemen, the other is a secret meeting of Prime minister, foreign secretary and the German ambassador Herr Ribbentrop in the same house. Stevens is indeed very busy to control his staffs. During the party, in the former case, Stevens senior, his father, died on the second floor, and Stevens is asked to tell the “Wonder of nature” to his godson Reginald Cardinal, from Lord Darlington. In the latter case, in the middle of most secret meeting, Reginald Cardinal, who is now columnist, suddenly visits the house disguising his true purpose and more worsens him Miss Kenton reveals her engagement. In the both cases, Stevens is interrupted to focus on the party. It also makes some discomfort to the readers, who confuse to wonder of which will be more important next.
Fourth, Stevens’s monologue has always inconsistent message. For example, Stevens says, on the one way, “you and I [we] will never be in a position to comprehend the great affairs of today’s world……” then following to the other way, “and our best course will always be to put our trust in an employer we judge to be wise and honorable……”; these two passages eventually contradict each other. how a butler evaluates that his employer is accurately honorable or not if the butler is not having a well-educated discernment. A plain butler can never choose an honorable his lordship or he must wait a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get a great employer, as Stevens says; There were many moving butlers seeking to an honorable employer in vein. Honestly, Stevens himself too was failed in the selection of his employer. His lordship, Lord Darlington was not honorable because he was once influenced by the Nazism and took several mistakes. Stevens blindly followed him with the belief that his lord must have been accomplishing the good deal for his country. He was betrayed his supreme employer. On the superficial context, Stevens is merely a show of justification for his stance, but is it true? The element of “One parson narrator is unreliable” is the basic Literature Theory. We must carefully read until the back sides of the pages.
Fifth, the story itself has a closed system on the upper stage. After short prologue, Stevens sets off the six days mortaring. In the first day, he meets old man sitting on the large stone, and in the last day, meets another old man sitting on the bench of the pier, the both seem to be enjoying the remains of the day of theirs. It suggests Stevens has a right of taking a same pleasure as “the evening’s the best part of the day.” The last part gives us somewhat peace and quiet though his past was very regrettable and remorseful.
This novel is very thoughtful text like, as it were, “Well-Wrought Urn”.

In the summer of 1956, Stevens, the ageing butler of Darlington Hall, embarks on a leisurely holiday that will take him deep into the English countryside and into his past . . . A haunting tale of lost causes and lost love, The Remains of the Day, winner of the Booker Prize, contains Ishiguro's now celebrated evocation of life between the wars in a Great English House - within its walls can be heard ever more distinct echoes of the violent upheavals spreading across Europe.

Ishiguro waffles. The butler waffles. But the butler really isn't a man used to talking. His mind strays, diverts, drags its way through memories, and in the end it is heartbroken that he couldn't do more for his master. Actually, the ending disappointed me a little, as I had seen an interview with Ishiguro where he says that he changed the ending to allow the butler to show a little compassion. I thought the "compassion" would be shown towards the woman who worked many years for him, but alas, no. It makes me wonder what changes were made in the movie by the same name.

But I was surprised to find a thought provoking, heartwarming tale about the ins and outs of a butler’s duties, circumstances and misfortunes. I say the latter not implying a sad story, but rather a real one, one that showcases the consequences of a person’s choices, albeit not all of them consciously made.

I love his humor and fragile sensitivity.

I don't know why I put off reading this book, the movie does not even come close (though it's close enough) to give it justice. Superb writing and very astute study of human nature and foibles. Highly recommend it.

Boek beschadigd door levering “in de brievenbus”… als het niet past dan past het niet, maar blijkbaar dan toch forceren. Zeer jammer want op meerdere plaatsen zijn er nu kreuken en deuken in het boek.

I thoroughly loved this book. Loved the subtle humor and the too-professional conversations between Mr. Stevens and Miss Kenton. Although Mr.Stevens never deviates from his too-professional attitude, you can sense his feelings for Miss Kenton. Until the end, I hoped that Mr. Stevens would make up for what he has lost, but the ending didn't disappoint me either.
Recommend this book to those who wish to explore the world of lords, butlers-the standards they were expected to live up to sacrificing their personal life in the journey.
