The China Lover ハードカバー – 2008/11/1
英語版
Ian Buruma
(著)
ダブルポイント 詳細
When Sidney Vanoven is sent to occupied Japan, in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, it is his dream posting. By day, he works in the censor's office watching Japanese films; at night he immerses himself in the sensual pleasures of Tokyo. His job leads him into the circle of the beautiful film star Shirley Yamaguchi, a passionate and indomitable woman, whose wartime secrets hint at deception and betrayal. As he becomes increasingly aware of her story, it seems to point at the dark heart of Japan itself. In The China Lover, Ian Buruma has created a saga of modern Japan that is epic in scale, richly imagined and vividly populated. It is quite simply unforgettable.

it must be awfully difficult to take such an inherently interesting era as the 2nd sino-japanese war and such an inherently interesting life as the film star Ri Koran's and render them cripplingly boring, but Ian Buruma has risen admirably to the task. bad writing, bad history, bad biography, bad everything. give it a miss entirely.

should be read by everyone! Great book!!! So enlightening and stimulating. Dawkins writes in such an engaging manner, making even the most difficult of topics comprehensible to the non-scientist types.

Buruma is a fascinating person, with his mixed cultural origins, his great interest in Japanese popular culture and his wide experience of Asia. This novel uses the career of a singer and movie actress, Shirley Yamaguchi, to throw light on three phases of Japan. The imperialist power of the 1930s, the supine loser of the post war decade, and the resurgent economic power of the Asian Tigers period. Three narrators, two Japanese and one American are used, freely drawing on the careers of others. Although it is packed with information and vivid images I did not draw from it any clear point. Its final narrator, for example, is a 1970s terrorist, one of the perps of the Lod Airport massacre. He spends most of his time in Lebanon, bemoaning his past and yearning for his lover. Practical Ms Yamaguchi marries well, does some reportage, and joins the political establishment. So.....?

Shirley Yamaguchi is a story one would never invent

This ‘novelises’ the story of Shirley Yamguchi. Brought up in multi-racial Manchuria before the war, this beautiful daughter of Japanese parents learns to speak perfect Mandarin and acquires the weatern classical musical tradition from Russian emigres. She joins a film unit established by a ruthless major-general of security to produce films extolling Japanese benevolence (sic) towards subject people. Her singing and acting are brilliant. She passes as Chinese so at the end of the war the Kuomintang and Communists are after her. She escapes to Japan and re-establishes her career both in Tokyo and Hollywood. Later she joins the Japanese senate after a turn at being a current affairs reporter ( she interviews Kim il Sung on the strength of her wartime reputation and becomes a fervent supporter of the PLO) This book makes a good stab at the story, some bits brilliant but others parts a bit patchy. Worth a read.

review of "China Lover"

I have an interest in Li Xianglan way before I knew about this novel. Actually I read other people's reviews on this novel as well as an interview with the author before I bought the book. The author is,of course, free to incorporate anything about Li into his fictional character. For those who intend to find out something about Li through this book, it would be a mixed blessing. True, the author did capture some aspects of her life, but reading the fiction also suggests some aspects of the author as a white Westerner who has a "certain" fascination of Asian women. Casual remarks made through the characters reveal some of this attitude. There is also a hint from his interview that the author does not react as most people do in regard to the Nanking Massacre. The reader can draw his/her opinion as to whether this has anything to do with the novel.
