Great Battles of the Hellenistic World ハードカバー – 2009/7/19
英語版
Joseph Pietrykowski
(著)
For almost two centuries the Macedonian phalanx, created by Philip II and refined by his son, Alexander the Great, dominated the battlefields of the ancient world from the sweltering riverbanks of India to the wooded hills of Italy. As the preferred weapon of some of antiquity's greatest commanders, this powerful military system took center stage in many of the largest and most decisive conflicts of ancient times. Joseph Pietrykowski explores the struggles that shook the ancient world and shaped history. From the structure and composition of the opposing armies, to the strategy of their campaigns, to the leadership decisions and tactics that decided the engagements, Great Battles of the Hellenistic World examines seventeen landmark conflicts from Chaironeia to Pydna over the course of 170 years of bloody warfare.

Great book, very well researched. I would have like to have seen maps and artistic renditions of the battles to visualize however, all text.

Great battles re-told

This book is one that starts with the battles of Phillip and Alexander against Greece and ends with the Roman domination of Greece. This is perhaps one of the greatest collections of ancient battle one could hope to have. It follows Alexander, his successors, Pyrrhus, and Roman conquest of Greece. The stories are precise, easy to read, with maps of every battle. I would give this book more than 5 stars if possible.

Good, but...

This is a good book with good descriptions of most of the great battles of the Hellenistic world, including those of Philip and Alexander, Alexander's successors, Pyrrhos of Epyrus, battles vs the Romans, and a few others.
My main complaint about the book is that the author feels it necessary to dramatize the battles with fictional "color". Here is one example of very many:
"Squinting out across an ocean of sand set glaringly afire by the brilliant morning sun, Alexander felt the dread grip of uncertainty begin to tighten its hold on him. Across the plain from his position the vast Persian army shuddered and churned restlessly, sifting thousands upon thousands of men and beasts into place. It was a sight to chill the blood of even the most battle-hardened veteran in his army."
I could cite hundreds of similar examples, but you get the point. If you like this kind of "color", this is the book for you; if you don't like it, like me, it is a distraction and annoyance from an otherwise good book.
