The Vampire Genevieve (Warhammer S.) ペーパーバック – 2005/12/20
The beautiful vampire, Genevieve Dieudonne, has been alive for hundreds of years, and has had a host of adventures in the dark forests and cities of the Warhammer world. Unlike the typical "killer" vampires of literature, Genevieve is a human friendly, adventurer in a manner you may not have seen before. There are four books in this one volume.

1) DRACHENFALLS: a dazzlingly original take on the classic "journey into the heart of darkness" theme, involving a hero, a heroine, a villain, a genius, and several others. This novel, on its own, should be the reason for you to read this book.
2) GENEVIEVE UNDEAD: A collection of several novellas which are of varying qualities, and have Genevieve in fringe roles. These novellas are:
(a) STAGEBLOOD: the sequel to Drachenfalls, as well as the Warhammer 'take' on "Phantom Of The Opera".
(b) COLD STARK HOUSE: a parody of every gothic novel, evident from not just the plot (bizarrely non-linear), but also from the names of the characters.
(c) UNICORN IVORY: a murder mystery, that doesn't "click" so well.
3) BEASTS IN VELVET: a gripping murder-mystery (with almost no role played by Genevieve, except a cameo appearance) that is the Warhammer 'take' on Jack The Ripper killings.
4) SILVER NAILS: another loose collection of novellas, some of which has Genevieve in it, and some doesn't. These novellas are:
(a) RED THIRST: an action-packed Genevieve adventure, which is the immediate prequel to the second part of DRACHENFALLS.
(b) NO GOLD IN THE GREY MOUNTAINS: a story involving Genevieve's grandmother-in-darkness (but NO Genevieve).
(c) THE IGNORANT ARMIES: the back-story of two characters who had played very important roles in "BEASTS IN VELVET" (but NO Genevieve).
(d) THE WARHAWK: another adventure of Policeman "Filthy" Harald and Scryer Rosanna (but NO Genevieve).
(e) THE IBBY THE FISH FACTOR: a humorous novella which has its chilling moments, but in its attempt to conclude the saga of Genevieve (and the genius Detlaf) on a happier note, with all loose ends tied up neatly, the story suffers to some extent.
Nevertheless, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anybody looking forward towards some escapist fun that has its moments of depth. And I must admit, the world needs heroines like Genevieve. Can the author bring her back please?!!!
Great condition and a great trilogy too! If you love the Warhammer fantasy universe and the macabre than you'll love this book!
I was wrong!
From the opening sequence of the ill-fated storming of Castle Drachenfels, it was almost impossible to put this book down. The Warhammer setting depicts a world of few heroes, where victory is measured by survival with your sanity reasonably intact, where even the noblest of dreamers can be corrupted by their own desires, and ignominious death is only a heartbeat away as Chaos and evil insinuate themselves into everyday life. These linked stories reflect that dark existence intensely, showing how cheap life is in the Empire. There are many novels which fail to ignite the reader's adrenaline simply because the main characters are immune from death, however perilous their situation. Here though, anyone can fall, and most do, at least some distance. What little levity exists in the author's writing merely serves to punctuate the aura of despair that clings to the book.
I've since read a few Warhammer novels, and most of them are of a very high standard, but none have yet equalled the quality of this one!
Having said that, the book is quite good. It definitely deserves a much wider audience than the Warhammer readership it's targeted to. If you have read any of Newman's other books and liked them, you'll definitely have a lot of fun with this volume.
The contents of the volume are as follows:
Drachenfels (novel)
-- Prologue: 25 Years Ago
-- Acts 1-5
-- Epilogue: Envoi
Genevieve Undead (3 novellas)
-- Part 1. Stage Blood
-- Part 2. The Cold Stark House
-- Part 3. Unicorn Ivory
Beasts in Velvet (novel)
Silver Nails (5 short stories/novellas)
-- Red Thirst
-- No Gold in the Grey Mountains
-- The Ignorant Armies
-- The Warhawk
-- The Ibby the Fish Factor
In this book, there are various stories thrown together which happening at differnt times in the internal chronology. Here is my suggestion: read the stories in the order of the internal chronolgy rather than the order in the book. If you do this, it actually kind of hangs together and kind of feels like a single sprawling novel with various subplots rather than just bunch of loosely-connected stories.
The following is the order that the events happen in the volume:
-- Drachenfels: Prologue: 25 Years Ago
-- Silver Nails: Red Thirst
-- Silver Nails: No Gold in the Grey Mountains
-- Drachenfels: Acts 1-5
-- Drachenfels: Epilogue: Envoi
-- Silver Nails: The Ignorant Armies
-- Beasts in Velvet
-- Genevieve Undead: Part 1. Stage Blood
-- Silver Nails: The Warhawk
-- Genevieve Undead: Part 2. The Cold Stark House
-- Genevieve Undead: Part 3. Unicorn Ivory
-- Silver Nails: The Ibby the Fish Factor
[ As a side note: Be aware that if you've read Newman's Diogenes Club stories or Anno Dracula novels, you may be dissappointed with the Genevieve portrayed here. The versions of Genevieve Dieudonne in those other works comes accross as very worldly and confident -- a strong and distinctive character. I found the Warhammer-universe Genevieve in this book actually rather passive most of the time and doesn't particularly stand out a distinctive personality. But maybe others will disagree with me... ]
