Royal Society Research Professor Emeritus at Cambridge University and Former Visiting Professor of Design at the Royal College of Art, London, UK Mike Ashby is sole or lead author of several of Elsevier's top selling engineering textbooks, including Materials and Design: The Art and Science of Material Selection in Product Design, Materials Selection in Mechanical Design, Materials and the Environment, and Materials: Engineering, Science, Processing and Design. He is also coauthor of the books Engineering Materials 1&2, and Nanomaterials, Nanotechnologies and Design.

This is a great book overall. There are some parts of it that seem a bit esoteric but overall I find it very useful for product designers and students. I really liked the Further Reading section at the end of each chapter as well as the exercises section. The Materials Profiles part was extremely useful for me in a sense that it helped me organize the existing information in my head which was badly jumbled up. Definitely worth reading and re-reading and referencing.

E' un libro ben progettato e concepito. Per me, che ho poca dimestichezza con le tecnologie di produzione, si è in particolare rivelata utile la sezione "a practical reference for inspiration" che è un compendio delle proprietà di alcuni materiali e processi di fabbricazione. La capacità di classificazione di processi e materiali è la principale forza del libro: molti grafici a bolla permettono di avere un'idea immediata delle proprietà dei materiali. La parte di progettazione del prodotto è invece parziale, a volte con alcuni spunti interessanti, a volte con approcci e riferiemnti che a me sembrano superati . Complessivamente si tratta comunque di un libro molto ben curato, con illustrazioni e grafici gradevoli e l'organizzazione dell'ultima sezione a schede rende il libro fruibile.

This is a great book that gives tons of useful and interesting information about tons of materials. But, when I received this book, the front cover had been bent back and flattened during the shipping process, leaving a crease across the entire height of the book. If you use/play with a lot of different media, this is the book for you!
