著者について

Susanna Kaysen (1948) was brought up in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she still lives. She has written two novels, ASA, AS I KNEW HIM and FAR AFIELD. While working on the latter, memories of her two year stay at McLean's Psychiatric Hospital began to emerge. With the help of a lawyer she obtained her 350 page file from the hospital. GIRL, INTERRUPTED followed.

自分の精神病棟での生活が淡々と記述されていて、読んでいるうちにKaysenが特別な病歴の人でなく、誰でも”精神病”になるかもしれないこが伝わってきます。原書では精神病関連の薬、病気については難解な単語を含みますが、会話で構成される部分がほとんどで、特に難解な表現はないため原書で十分に内容を味わうことができます。映画にはないの゛Girl、Interrupted"のタイトルをつけるにいたったストーリーもこの本では記述されています。

This novel has changed my perspective about madness. Well, in fact if one is totally perfect it's not the kind to be approved of.
The author reflects her ideas about madness in a direct way, and also precisely. Sadly, there are many who despise just because they are not normal people living upon public shared ideas. If you think you're crazy you are sure to be sane.
But these social livelihood often makes you worry about your true self. So people will lose confidence, meaning in life, be depressed always and then your brain will protect you from any stress by being mad, the state you have no control.
The author, who is the heroin of this novel struggle to be her own self and therefore faces a great problem what the world is.
In these process I just reconsidered my values on life.

　先ずタイトルから驚きました。ルノワールの絵画「ピアノを弾く少女」の原題をまねてあるとは。Interrptedという言葉は、ぴったりの表現で、しかも、その中断された期間というのは、ピアノを弾く少女が譜面を確認するのと同じように、人生を歩む過程において必要な「確認」のための時間だと思いました。

　私も精神科病棟に入院した経験がありますが、６０年代の方が対応が良いのではないだろうかと思う箇所もありました。日本とアメリカの違いはありますが、私の病棟もこの本と同様の若い女性たちが多く、症状も同じようなものでした。

　精神病と言われているものはどういうものなのか、精神科病棟とは一体どんな感じなのか、そしてそこにいる者は何を考えているのか、それを知りたい方は一読されることをお勧めします。

　生の英会話表現に興味のある方にもお勧めです。悪態をつく表現など、日常会話ではよく出で来る表現なのに、日本では習わないものが結構出てきます。使い方も学べます。勿論、普通の表現もです。思っていることを言えるようになりたい方には特に参考にして頂きたい本です。

著者本人による朗読版。スザンナの率直な語り口が聞きやすく、最後まで飽きずに聞きとおせた。
映画は原作とかなり違うのですが、原作のほうが物語に深みがあり、面白いと思う。映画はちょっとドラマティックに仕上げすぎていて、原作を読んだあとは、もう見たくない、と思えてしまう。
こんな風に簡単にいくのかと思うほど、まんまとはめられて精神病棟へ入れられてしまい、出るに出られない状態のスザンナが同じフロアの住人との出来事を淡々と語っていく。人物描写もうまく、突き放したかんじで表現しているのが面白かった。使われている言葉は粗野で下品だったりするけれど、リアリティがあって、スザンナの語り口も絶妙。
最後にDSM診断基準を一つ一つ冷静にコケにしていくのが爽快。
normalとabnormalの境目なんて以外とあやふやで、誰だって足を踏み入れる瞬間はあるのでは、と思わせる。
友達の体験談を聞くような感じで3時間ほどがあっという間に過ぎていく。spoken English　に慣れていない人には早いと感じるかもしれないけど、話し方は一本調子ではないので飽きさせない。中級者向けかも。

この『ＧＩＲＬ，ＩＮＴＥＲＲＶＰＴＥＤ』は著者スザーナ　ケイスンさんの実体験が書かれているためまるで本を読んでいる自分がその世界に入り込んでいる気がしました。
また当時のカルテのコピーや、スザーナさんが書いた手紙なども載っています。
いったい私たちは、何が基準で正常と異常を区別していたのか？
精神病院の中の方が、この嘘で固められた世界よりずっといいのでは？と思いました。
この作品は映画化されていますが、映画では省略されてしまっている重要な部分も多く見られました。
字が大きく、簡単な英語で書かれているため、英語上達の第一歩として読んでもいい本だと思います。

Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted is an extremely effective memoir. Not only does it fit the definition and criteria for a good memoir; it also teaches a valuable lesson and actively destigmatized aspects of mental illness. I was interested in reading this memoir as having been admitted to a psychiatric facility myself, I have always taken an interest in how it was when stigmas were heavy, and information was scarce. By criteria Girl, Interrupted is an effective memoir, and the novel is very progressive for it’s time.
Girl interrupted is a memoir of self discovery. It’s theme being loss and regaining of identity. Throughout the memoir Kaysen is constantly learning about herself, and learning to accept herself. This is displayed when she speaks about her diagnosis. “I didn't read them until 25 years later, a character disorder is what they had told me” (kaysen, 150). Kaysen did not know much about her diagnosis until 25 years later as she mentioned. In this chapter she speaks about borderline personality disorder and speaks on how the symptoms are applicable to her experiences. This represents self discovery as not only does she understand her diagnosis, but she also sees how she relates to its criteria. This is just one example of the ways Kaysen discovers herself throughout the memoir, though in her stay at Mclean's she discovers her true identity and who she is in and out of inpatient care.
The dialogue in girl interrupted is also stellar. Kaysen does an amazing job at creating an accurate voice for each character. For example, Lisa is portrayed as very cold and tough. Her voice exudes this when Daisy requests a cigarette from her, and Lisa denies this by saying “get your own, bitch” (Kaysen, 79). This line uses unnecessary cursing and hostility to represent Lisa’s personality. Kaysen succeeds in this with every character. There is a good amount of dialogue in the novel, and this adds to the reading experience by allowing readers to get to know each character, and their unusual ways of interacting with others.
Girl interrupted also sets and describes the novel’s scene extremely well using imagery. Reading the novel painted an accurate image in my head of what the hospital looks like. The female adolescent ward (the ward Kaysen is on) is described as having furniture only to be found in a psychiatric ward; it is depicted as boring and lifeless. The patients even make a point of avoiding certain rooms and congregating elsewhere. These descriptors are effective as I feel as though I was looking around the ward whilst reading. Kaysen also thoroughly describes other settings such as the ice cream shop the patients visit, and her apartment after she is discharged from the hospital. Kaysen makes use of imagery to accurately describe the major setting, and even minor settings in the memoir.
Personally, I could not put this novel down whilst reading. The memoir kept me interested throughout and taught me about the treatment and understanding of mental illness in the 60s. Whilst reading the memoir, I found myself comparing hospitals then to hospitals now. For example, their as needed medication was thorazine whilst now one would be given a benzodiazepine or seroquel. A major difference I sought out is that doctors did not tell patients much about their diagnosis whilst now treatment teams are extremely transparent with patients as to what they're going through and how it will be treated. Whilst I was in the hospital, Girl, Interrupted started many conversations, other patients would rave about it and I now know why. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone but especially those suffering from mental illnesses. Not only is it interesting to see how mental illness was treated in the 60s with knowledge of the current system, but it also lessons the loneliness that accompanies being mentally ill. Similar to Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, not only do novels about mental health lessen stigmas, but they also create a sense of comfort and kind of a “hey i'm not alone, i'm not crazy” to those who may be struggling.
