This is my favorite photography book. You should get it - really! I thought it would be out-of-print for sure and was overjoyed to find it still available.
The Innocents project by Taryn Simon is one of the most interesting series of photography work around. Taking people whom have been wrongly accused of crimes back to sites relating to the crime and photographing them in it was a very clever idea. However the actual photographs are so intriguing without even knowing the ideas behind the project.
The images are spooky. Can a site or location contain ghosts? Simon's project makes me think so! Or at least the work shows a dark history of a location.
The accompanying text relating to each person's experience also contributes the reality of this issue.
I always show this book to my students as it is powerful and really make one think about a sense of place and the human condition.
Highly recommended.

The Innocents ハードカバー – 2003/6/1
Leading civil rights attorneys Peter Neufeld and Barry Scheck of The Innocence Project commissioned photographer Taryn Simon to travel across the United States photographing and interviewing individuals who were convicted of heinous crimes of which they were innocent. Simon photographed these innocents at sites of particular significance to their illegitimate conviction: the scene of the crime, misidentification, arrest, or alibi. Simon’s portraits are accompanied by a commentary by Neufeld and Scheck.

I read the book. I donated money to The Innocents Project. [...] What else can you do, when you realise that there are still so many people in US jails because they can't afford to get the DNA testing that will prove they didn't do the crimes. It could be me, it could be you, but by chance it happens to be them.

Land of the Free? My arse. America, you are hypocrisy defined. Your justice system is farcical. Unlike this book, you have no integrity.
