S,M,L,XL presents a selection of the remarkable visionary design work produced by the Dutch firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.) and its acclaimed founder, Rem Koolhaas, in its first twenty years, along with a variety of insightful, often poetic writings.

The inventive collaboration between Koolhaas and designer Bruce Mau is a graphic overture that weaves together architectural projects, photos and sketches, diary excerpts, personal travelogues, fairy tales, and fables, as well as critical essays on contemporary architecture and society.

The book's title is also its framework: projects and essays are arranged according to scale. While Small and Medium address issues ranging from the domestic to the public, Large focuses on what Koolhaas calls "the architecture of Bigness." Extra-Large features projects at the urban scale, along with the important essay "What Ever Happened to Urbanism?" and other studies of the contemporary city.

Running throughout the book is a "dictionary" of an adventurous new Koolhaasian language - definitions, commentaries, and quotes from hundreds of literary, cultural, artistic, and architectural sources.

Rem Koolhaas is founder of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.); the firm's most important projects include the Lille Grand Palais in Lille; the Kunsthal in Rotterdam; Netherlands Dance Theatre in The Hague; Nexus Housing in Fukuoka; the Dutch House in Holland; and Villa dall'Ava in Paris, all of which are included in S,M,L,XL. Koolhaas is author of the seminal Delirious New York and professor in practice of architecture and urban design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Bruce Mau founded the critically acclaimed firm Bruce Mau Design in 1985. He is the author of Life Style and Massive Change.

この一冊の本は、都市であり建築であり、あるいは映画でもある。世界で最も注目される建築家の一人、レムコールハースとグラフィックデザイナー、ブルースマウとの共著により、１９９５年に出版された。レムコールハース、OMAによるこれまでの活動、理論、情報、文脈、思考、調査、編集等の混交を視覚化させ、小さいものから大きいものへとサイズごとに分類させた。単に彼らの活動の軌跡を追うものではない、研究理論の集大成でもなく、新しい未来のマニフェストでもない。この一冊の本から現代都市の抱く問題を読み取る者もいれば、建築の手法を手にする者もいる。あるいは思考を深める辞書のように扱う者もいるだろう。多種多様な見えない感覚が飛び交う現代社会のように、何を求め何を手にするかは読み手の自由である。ルコルビュジェ作品集にかわる、２１世紀の書物のひとつになるだろう。

宇宙の中にある地球という極ミクロな世界にこれまたミクロの死んだ生き物を複雑かつシンプルに蘇生させ、組成する人間はレムコールハースの遊びの世界にまんまとはまってしまう。レム自身の細胞の一つにある建築の宇宙をみる喜びに浸るには最高のテキストであり至極の喜びである。

I bought this book to study architecture and while flipping through the book I saw some sexually explicit images...Like, really explicit. Not cool. I'm glad I bought it for myself and not someone else. I think those pages should be removed, or altered. You can make your statement without the images...Besides that the quality is great.

Obra muy rica en información que incluye diccionario, ensayos, etc. Excelente para los amantes de arquitectura. Aunque tenga más de 20 años, sigue teniendo una excelente representación gráfica aún vigente (en algunos casos) para nuestros días. Con este libro aprenderás a sintetizar y graficar información de una forma muy diferente a cómo estás acostumbrado.
