un tesoro

Es una gran novela policiaca que he descubierto por casualidad. Aunque está escrita hacia finales de los años cuarenta, resulta muy moderna. Tiene, además, un ritmo trepidante, en una extraña América durante la segunda guerra mundial.

This outstanding thriller, first published in 1947, takes the reader on a suspenseful journey with Lucia Holley, a housewife caring for her family while her husband is serving overseas in WW 2.
This respectable, cautious woman involves herself in a serious crime and is then drawn into a circle of shady, dangerous characters. The author unfolds the plot with well managed fast pacing and leaves the reader turning the pages to see how Lucia will fare. Holding’s writing is so good that there’s never a dull page.
Just as impressively, Holding builds the character of Lucia in layers, achieving a rich portrait of a woman who doubts her worth, feels trapped by her role as a mother and homemaker but finds strength and courage to confront her fear.
There is a finely drawn, yet elusive portrait of one of the criminals into whose circle Lucia is drawn. The reader doubts his sincerity. Is he falling for her and she for him? Every scene between them is charged.
Equally well realised and intriguing is the character of the family’s maid. Neither Lucia nor the reader is ever quite sure about just how much Sylvie knows about what is happening.
The exquisitely written ending sees Lucia pondering how the rest of her life will play out after her diversion to the dark side.
The novel has had two movies based on it: 1949’s “The Reckless Moment”, starring Joan Bennett and James Mason and “The Deep End” in 2001.

Domestic intrigue abounds...

...and makes for a rich and wonderful story. A mother tries to protect her family and home from a seedy element that enters their lives in an unexpected way. The manner in which the story unfolds is mesmerizing. I felt horrible for the main character as she watched her life and the lives of her family unravel, and rejoiced each time she pulled herself together. The relationship between her and her father is touching to read, and the relationship between her and her maid brings an entirely other issue into the story.
My favorite line(s) in the book: "This is my life, going on just the same....And all that had happened to her would be, must be, pushed down, out of sight; the details of daily living would come like falling leaves to cover it."
I've only recently discovered Persephone books and I adore them. I was so pleased to find a few available on my Kindle. Can we please have more???

Into the most ordinary lives, drama can erupt. Into the life of Lucia, coping on a reasonable income while her husband is away fighting WWII, erupts that common issue, the daughter's unsuitable boyfriend. The mother can see clearly what he is (a nasty little shit out to damage women) while the 17-year-old daughter is swept up on a wave of sexual feelings and desire to rebel against her mother's life. Common scenario, but what happens next isn't. I won't spoil it for you, except to say I identified utterly with Lucia - a mother so intent on protecting her children that she will do literally anything - and I mean that, the most extreme things. I would too. Raymond Chandler rated Sanxay Holding highly. Now going to try and get hold of her other books.

Three quarters through the book I am only thinking of the movie and how much better the interpretation is

The Deep End movie with Tilda Swinton is based on this book. I've seen the movie several times. The mother character is so fascinating (Swinton). The mother in Blank Wall is not admirable, but weak and pathological. Three quarters through the book I am only thinking of the movie and how much better the interpretation is; this ruined the book somewhat for me. Then the story got really good and suspenseful as the mother and Donally moved to hide the crime. In fact the book now surpassed the movie in this area. Overall there are many good parts and characters in the book.
