著者について

Matt Dickinson is an award-winning writer and filmmaker with a passion for climbing and adventure. During his filmmaking career he has worked as a director/cameraman for National Geographic television, the Discovery Channel, the BBC and Channel 4. His film projects have taken him to Antarctica, Africa and the Himalaya, often in the company of the world's leading climbers and expeditioners. His most notable film success was Summit Fever in which Matt reached the summit of Everest via the treacherous north face. His book The Death Zone tells the true story of that ascent and has become a bestseller in many different countries. Matt is currently patron of reading at Eltham College and continues to climb and explore. In January 2013 he summited Mount Aconcagua, which, at 6,965 metres, is the highest peak in the world outside the Himalaya. In 2016, and again in 2017, he was back on Everest as writer in residence with Jagged Globe's South Col Expedition. Currently, he is planning an ascent of Denali in Alaska, one of the 'seven summits'. Recently Matt has started writing fiction for teenage readers. His debut thriller series Mortal Chaos was well received by critics and readers alike. Matt followed this up with the Everest Files, a dramatic and popular trilogy set on the world's highest mountain, and the teen thriller Lie Kill Walk Away. When he's not writing, Matt tours the globe, speaking at schools and colleges and inspiring a new generation of adventurers.

Love this book and its wonderful story line; one that I was not expecting. One of the better climbing books out of the past ten years. Yes, the ending also caught me totally by surprise. I gave this book five stars because firstly it is a good read, and secondly it was a completely new and very considered telling of a familiar story, all be it mostly in factual accounts, of climbing on Everest. The author Matt Dickinson clearly draws on his own expereinces of climbing Everest, and of spending time in Nepal to paint a vivid, engrossing and exciting tale about a young Nepalese Sherpa and his heroics. It explores many aspects of Sherpa life, values and society, as well as the influence of Western climbing expeditions. The books takes the reader along on quite an adventure, and as the protaganist has to grow up fast along the way, so too does the book have a lot of elements to challenge its intended target market, that of the young teenage boy/girl. Indeed for me the strength of this book is its depth, yes it is a good adventure story, but I believe it has a lot more to offer the reader.

The book deals with greed, death, accidents, friendships and loyalties. It is set in the beautiful mountain regions of Nepal, a land of snow leopards, deadly avalanches and high altude sickness all under the enthralling beckoning on Everest herself.

For the adult reader the first 50 or 60 pages of scene setting need to be got through in order to get to the more pacey and exciting mountain action, but for the teenager the early chapters are essential introductions and a good frame to the plot that ensues.

I really enjoyed this. I love reading at bedtime, so I like something light that I can quickly get sucked into.

I thought the plot would be obvious but it wasn't. I'm not sure if I will read the next one since I feel like I should read something a bit more serious but it does keep nagging at me to buy it. Pretty sure I will cave in the next couple of days.
