Programming Google Glass ペーパーバック – 2013/12/31

4.1 5つ星のうち4.1 7個の評価

Google Glass is the new wearable computer everyone's talking about. It offers a head-mounted optical display and touch interface, and it's programmable. Kick-start your Glassware development by exploring how users can interface with Glass, developing a Glass application fast by using the Mirror API to manipulate Timeline cards and menus, tracking a Glass's geolocation, creating rich interactions by responding to user inputs, and capturing or serving user images and videos. This is the book to read for a shortcut to this brave new world.

Google Glass is the next big thing in portable technology---a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display.
Programming Google Glass is your all-inclusive guidebook for crafting your own Glassware using the Mirror API.

You'll start by setting up a production-ready service using Google App Engine, then provide Glass users an authorization to your Glassware. You'll learn how to handle the provided credentials, and from there you'll dive into the parts that make up the Glass interface, managing the timeline and creating cards and menu items. Next you'll create services where the user can interact with your server, such as geolocation tracking, change notifications, and custom menu options. You'll use this information to create a sophisticated application that suggests local restaurants. You'll see how to attach or detach assets, images, and video, and learn the basics of the emerging field of optical-display design. You'll see how to properly design new Glassware and update existing applications to become Glassware.

Now is the best time to be an early adopter of a technology that will only become more advanced, nuanced, and ubiquitous.

What You Need:

You will need a Google Glass device and Java 1.6 or greater. An Android device, like a smart phone or tablet, is also helpful, but not necessary.

5つ星のうち5.0 Chapter 3, at first, was challenging

I've been in the industry for years. Programmed from VB to Java to Node to WebRTC. The OAuth chapter cites the cloud console and doesn't come close on how the site is navigated. I've struggled with how to create an "app" after creation of a project but the cloud console provides no way to create an app.

The book contains the following passage:

Select the Registered Apps tab, and click the Register App button.

Again, since this route does not exist, I'm at a show-stopper.

My hope is that the author immediately addresses this in the errata. If Mr. Redmond would help in this area I would be willing to amend my rating. Otherwise, I wasted time and money.

Overall well organized and explains most of what is going on. As a newer java programmer I tried to follow along with the examples so I would hopefully learn better but found this frustrating because the imports weren't shown in the example code. Definitely go to the publisher website and download the programs from each chapter.
I was thankful for the instructions on how to set up eclipse but apparently didn't follow closely enough. I missed one paragraph on adding the Google APIs and was stuck for at least an hour with programs that wouldn't compile.
The chapter on OAuth2 is very much appreciated and I found that demystified the process to a great extent.

Chapter 3, on oAuth is worthless.
The oAuth model has changed since this writing.
He does not show the steps to get to various pages, you have to fish around, and the setup instructions are just plain wrong!
I bought the Glass for Dummies book and was disappointed it didn't cover the Mirror API, but that wasn't its intent.
This one is supposed to be about just that, and I am no closer to a working glass Card than I was before I knew the book existed!

Well written and very useful.

I am a career CIO and a recreational coder on multiple platforms, and Glass/Mirror is a new kind of animal.

Kudos and thanks to the author. Eric did a really nice job of giving me understanding of new concepts associated with the Glass interface, which made my consumption and application of the technical reference material much more efficient.

Some parts quickly became outdated, but this still helped tremendously at figuring out how to develop with the Mirror API and covers a lot of details that online tutorials, docs, and forums never mentioned.
