This book tells the story of Kyojiro Hata's entry into Louis Vuitton, and how he helped the Louis Vuitton Japan branch to grow. He tells his story with a calm clarity, and makes it seem that what he did was the only logical path he could have taken. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in branding in Japan.

Some of the reviews made this book sound like a gem. However, after reading it I was appalled at the lack of substance and information. The author does not shed any 'innovative' ideas or strategies. The theme of the book is very interesting however, sadly it does not live up to the hype or the basic expectations of a business book. It lacks details (where are the branding strategies?), and is filled with fluff and is definitely not short of the author incessantly blowing his own trumpet (heard of modesty much?). The author could have taken some tips from Michael Dell's Direct from Dell which gives the reader loads of information, insight without painting just the positive points but also, the failures and disappointments that form solid learning material with regards to the building of a global brand. I wouldn't give this book any stars if it was remotely possible.

A Deceptively Simple, Curiously Endearing Book

I learned more about the Japanese way of life and business than I was expecting from reading this simply written, straightforwardly factual account. Hatasan is a man who had a vision, doggedly pursued and modestly described. Reading between the lines we discover that one of the business phenomena of the 20th and 21st centuries was due to the dedication and devotion to duty of a clear-thinking man who politely refused to take no for an answer. It's clear from his writing - although sometimes it's what he doesn't say rather than what he does which illuminates his subject - why so many Western brands have collapsed spectacularly when their US and European directors have attempted to storm the Japanese market. 'The Building of Luxury' could give the impression that doing business in Japan is as simple and straightforward as Kyojiro Hata's writing; his strategies seem almost childishly uncomplicated for anyone brought up on the Harvard Business Review, but without this modest genius, I suspect that LV would have retired from the Japanese market severely injured very early on.
It only takes a few hours to read, but there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.

One of the most interesting books on fashion I have ever read. Marketing, sales and business aspects on how the brand expanded in Japan told by an insider. Read it!
