Stunning high-flying illustration work
Romain Hugault’s amazing illustrations is the singular reason why I bought this graphic novel. Quite frankly, the best I’ve seen in the genre. You can tell he has thoroughly researched his subject and that he has great knowledge of these planes. This becomes quite evident in the close up frames. The same attention to details has been applied in the scenes depicting the great flood of 1910 in Paris. Very glad I found this series — it is truly a visual pleasure from cover to cover. Highly recommended!

Hugault does it again!
This is a 48-page hardback graphic novel in typical Hugault style. This one is set in World War One, and follows the adventures of a pilot. It was written by Yann, who has worked with Hugault before. This outing for the pair works very well indeed. The story rattles a lot at a great pace, and the dialogue is pithy and lively. Hugault has excelled himself with the graphics, which are never less than fabulous. His attention to detail is quite amazing; he depicts the correct uniforms, weapons, vehicles and fashions throughout.
Hugault often includes female nudity in his books. In this case it seems a little gratuitous, even if it is part of the story. That said, his artwork is of an unflinching nature throughout, which lifts his stories far above the realm of the war comics from which they came. As with all Hugault's books, this one is written entirely in French. I speak a little bit of French, so I can struggle through the text (I Google occasional phrases), but even if you speak no French, the stories are quite easy to follow from the graphics alone.
If you are interested in the beautiful end of graphic novels, then an example of Hugault's work really should be in your collection. It is amazing to me that he is so little known outside of France. At £10.15 (at March 2012) it is significantly cheaper than all his other books, but no less worthy.

Aprés le grand Duc, voici l'Edelweiss

Beautifully presented WW1 story. Not for the kids.

The usual gorgeous artwork, parts of it verging on the pornographic, not for the prudish. Sadly difficult to keep track of the individual characters as the story developes, but interesting enough for me to want to get hold of further 'tomes'. But I have to ration myself.
