Kuhn was born in Brazil, but spent decades in the US, developing her craft and distinctive style. So, when she returned to her native land, she brought a refined visual sensibility as well as whatever nostalgia moved her ot visit.
The photos divide clearly into two groups: the land and the people, with photos of each interleaved throughout the book. Kuhn represents the land using its jungles, the complex shapes of its trees layers of growth. She isolates specific moments in time using narrow depth of field, so that one growing tendril or branch might stand framed by softened shapes in the colors of growth. For the Brazilian people, Kuhn generally uses simple portraiture, but with a monumental stability about the figures - the cover photo, "Marina," presents the finest of this part of her work. Although models recur, Kuhn use a range of features and coloring, with nearly as many men as women represented. Some appear as couples, often with the sense of isolation between them that Hopper's paintings express so often. The models occasionally present a pensive mood. Most, however, convey quiet, strength, and stability.
Although dramatic, I do not find the nature photography as moving as the figure studies and portraiture. Even then, camera techniques sometimes stand in the way of expression. Kuhn's models present many faces of beauty, but I find them static and restrained. These photos are beautiful. The book is beautifully composed and printed, on opaque stock that seems likely to endure many years of enjoyment. Still, I can't call this a must-have for any photography collection.

"This work started as a personal journey. Metaphorically, I was thinking of a bird that flies back into the forest, searching for its childhood nest. The images here are a creation of my abstracted wishes and dreams. As I was searching, instead of home, I found an empty past, just traces of it. Yet, my journey was filled with new friendships and discoveries made along the way," writes Los Angeles-based photographer Mona Kuhn about her journey back to her native Brazil after 20 years. Her third photobook, Native unfolds slowly, as a dreamy narration of this adult exploration of her childhood home. Photographed in the rainforest and surrounding city area, the images are suffused with a deep green, gold and pink palette. Native is accompanied by an essay from critic Shelley Rice.
