"The Joy Luck Club" contains the stories of four mothers and daughters who are family friends through a mahjong gathering called the Joy Luck Club. The book is a collection of interlinked short stories, 2 stories each narrated by the 8 main characters. The book alternates between tales of the mothers in pre-war China, and their daughters in modern-day San Francisco.

The stories from China include the story of Suyuan Wu, who fled from her home in Kweilin during the Japanese invasion and lost her husband and twin baby children. Then there's An-mei Hsu, who had an unhappy childhood raised by her grandmother and forbidden from seeing her mother, and how she later moved in with her mother in her new home as the fourth concubine of a wealthy man. Lindo Jong tells of how she was engaged to someone in a neighboring village when she was still only a toddler and treated as if she were a servant in her new home, and of the day she found the strength to change her own fate. Ying-ying St. Clair is a tomboyish young girl who has an abortion of her first child after she found out her husband was openly having affairs with other women, and later marries an American and immigrates to the U.S. The daughters include Jing-mei Woo, who is directionless in life and relates how she felt the disappointment of her mother when she failed to become a child prodigy. Waverly Jong was a chess champion as a child, and as an adult still feels her mother's relentless criticism affecting her happiness and second marriage. Rose Hsu is in the middle of a divorce, but lies in bed without the strength to do anything about it. Lena St. Clair struggles with issues about fairness and equality with her husband and previous coworker, who insists on splitting all costs down the middle, although he makes much more than her.

The stories of the mothers in China are all very shocking and moving, feeling as if they come from a faraway time and place, yet at the same time very immediate and real. The stories of the daughters in San Francisco feel very familiar and all incredibly relatable.

In America, the typical "American immigrant story" tends to consist of the stereotypical "work hard and have a better life" storyline, but I was pleasantly surprised that in "The Joy Luck Club" I found something much more nuanced and emotionally complex! The book talks about how the mothers found their strength and fought for their independence in China, but then express their disappointment when they see that these lessons were lost and not passed on to their daughters growing up in America. It talks about how the daughters see their mothers boasting about their children in front of each other, but being highly critical at home. The daughters feel the mothers cannot understand their lives, and the mothers feel the daughters are not understanding them either.

"Joy Luck Club" is often assigned reading for high school students, but reading the book as an adult (and also the same age as the daughters' generation in this book) would resound much more strongly. I especially recommend this book to women in their 20's and 30's and anyone interested in intergenerational or multicultural issues.

短編集です。ＡＭＹ　ＴＡＮの小説は、行間に余韻があって、まるで中国の水墨画のような山水を目の前に浮かべることができるような、視覚的にも情緒あふれる筆致で、日本人には読みやすい感があります。とくに文化大革命前後を題材にした短編は、山水画と漢詩が行間に漂うような筆づかいです。

私は、著者と年齢が非常に近いせいか・・・時代背景が懐かしく感じられ、中国の歴史的変動期（日華事変から毛沢東の反撃、文化大革命へと続く激動の時代）に翻弄されつつも、たくましく生き抜く女性史としても楽しめます。
日本軍の侵略が中国に及ぼした打撃、突然の侵攻に慌てふためく人々、そういった歴史的背景を、政治的に批判するでなく、淡々と筆を選んでいる。
これは米国生まれの筆者が、中国という自身のルーツを客観的に眺めるスタンスで物語を進めている故でもあり、また、両親の中に流れる中国文化への懐古と哀愁を中華系社会のなかで折に触れて感じてきた故かもしれません。政治色は皆無です。
これは、ＡＭＹ　ＴＡＮの小説のなかでも、お薦めの短編集です。
米国人の彼女の視線を透して中国文化を書き起こせば、戦後の混乱期を、ここまで美しく昇華できるのか・・と、美しい筆致に感動します。

本短編集のみならず、ＴＡＮの、ほかの作品にも共通して窺えますが、母親の世代つまり中国で幼年期を過ごし成人してからアメリカに移住した世代と作者の世代、すなわちアメリカで生まれ過ごしたものとの2世代、3世代の血縁の因習、絆を深く描く心理描写は、日本の昭和初期の私小説、自然主義文学と共通するようなタッチで、日本人には親しみやすい作家ではないでしょうか？母と娘の愛憎。心遣い。そういう心情の機微を描くのが上手い！
文学としてはホンモノかな？と感じます。
会話をベースに状況を説明する手法。文章が上手い。日本人の私には、すんなり読み進める構成です。

文体の格調の高さ、内容の重みや厚さといったことを求める人には評価されない作品だと思います。ただ単にストーリー展開の楽しさを求める人には絶賛されるでしょう。あまり深く考えないで読めば、かなり楽しめる作品です。 私はまた非常に読むことを推薦する--The Fates by Tino Georgiou!

１９４９年、サンフランシスコ。過去の陰に引かれるように四人の中国人女性が集まり、マージャン卓を囲む。昔話に花咲かせるその集まりをジョイラッククラブと呼んだ。ほぼ、４０年がたちメンバーの一人が亡くなった。一人一人が過去も記憶をたどり、悲劇のおとぎ話を紡いでいく。
原文から好きな個所を引用してみる。
I wiped my eyes and looked in the mirror. I was suprised at what I saw. I had on a beautiful red dress, but what I saw was even more valuable. I was strong. I was pure. I had genuine thoughts inside that no one could see, that no one could ever take away from me.

文春文庫からジョイ・ラック・クラブ　小沢瑞穂訳が出版されていたが2016年現在絶版らしい。こちらも素晴らしい翻訳だけに絶版は残念。復刊を願う。

The Joy Luck Club is a club where old friends meet to play mahjong. The friends form 4 corners of the table. One of the friends has died and her daughter will take her place. Amy Tan tells wonderful stories of the friends. She tells all about their days in China. She tells of their transitions to being Americans. They live in San Francisco. The book is rich in Chinese culture. It’s insightful and heartwarming.

This was the book that launched Amy Tan's writing career and is truly outstanding novel that explores daughter/mother relationships (and that of families in general). I have been a fan of Tan's stories from the beginning and this book was purchased to introduce my eldest daughter to her writings. I can attest to the fact she shares my taste in good literature, and continues to rave about "The Joy Luck Club"
If you haven't experienced Amy Tan, then this book is a perfectly logical place to start!

The book arrived speedily and in perfect conditions. The cover is beautiful, as is usual with the Penguin Orange Collection. The cover has a matte finish to it, and the pages are of a not-too-white shade, which makes the reading comfortable. The stories of the four families are very interesting. So far, an excellent acquisition.

This book has been sitting on my to-read list for a while now, so glad I finally managed to read it - it’s brilliant.

This novel explores the deep, complicated and strong bond between mothers and daughters. We daughters perceive so much of our mothers’ faults, our manner and tone often condescending at their ‘outdated, foreign ways’, yet, we have so much of our mothers in us. Their strength, selflessness and unconditional love for us is a huge anchor for us, yet we so often take them for granted.

Nevertheless, this story doesn’t paint a simple narrative that glosses over how this same strength and depth of a mother’s love can be tainted by their own imperfections too.

I also loved how this story also sheds light on both Chinese and American history.

I’d highly recommend this!
