Business / Careers / Psychology
A Book for the Retired, Unemployed, and Overworked、
同じ著者の "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free" のほうをおすすめします。
Retirement Is Boring Only If You Retire from Life
・You May Be Living, but Are You Alive?
・Are You Listening to Your Calling?
・Now--and Only Now--Can You Experience the Now
・In Yourself Is the Universe

Unlike most retirement books this one concentrates on what you will want to do in retirement. I’ve given a number of these as gifts. Sadly looks like it may be out of print?

A Book that Celebrates Freedom, Intentional Living and "Creative Loafing"
"The Joy of Not Working" is a great little book for giving a person a new perspective on work and on life.
The idea behind this book is that, essentially, the vast majority of people, primarily in Western society, have become indoctrinated with a set of self-limited and harmful beliefs in regards to what constitutes "the good life." The book is written in a conversational, free-wheeling yet not-chaotic style that helps readers appreciate the way the ideas of the book will relate to his or her life.
One of the book's only flaws is that the quotes on the side of the book, while nice in and of themselves, can be a bit distracting; I'd prefer the quotes to come as interstitials between paragraphs rather than "asides," written on the margins of the page. If I were the type of person who wrote in the margins of books, I'd probably find the quotes a bit cramping. Though I don't write in book margins, I found the placements of the quotes to simply be a visual distraction to reading the actual paragraphs.
The other minor flaw of the book is that to some extent, I got the impression that there was some small degree of padding; lots of texts wasn't as specific or concrete as I'd like it to have been at times.
These minor flaws aside, the book was a great read overall, and very eye-opening. I read it just after finishing "The Power of Full Engagement" by Jim Loher and Tony Schwartz, and these two books make fine companions for each other, especially if, like me, you're reading them because your life/work life isn't satisfying you fully. The latter has more practical advice about personal habits, especially as they relate to your career or work; this book focuses more on re-examining your beliefs about life, work, and what constitutes "the good life" in the first place.
I highly recommend giving this book a read, it might just change the way you view your work, your life, and the way society approaches the subject of value. It's not about just being lazy, it's about finding work that you want to do rather than have to do, and it's about taking enough time to pursue your own passions. Give it a read if you're not happy with your work.

I ordered this book for a family member who has just retired in his 50's. I took a peek inside and found myself reading it cover to cover. Having found it interesting, and completely defacing it in the process, I was forced to buy another copy for him and a couple more for friends. It is so inspiring. I am planning my wind down and rethinking my work ethic. This book has made me look at myself and what I truely want to achieve out of my short time on this plain. Instead of saying that I will do X one day, I am planning to do it sooner rather than later. I am going to reinvent myself and take more time to enjoy living. I would definately recommend this book to anyone wishing to improve their quality of life.

The book has a fresh perspective on being out of work or retired. Occupations during times of not working can be fulfilling and without cost.
