　最新鋭のジャンボジェット機、ボーイング747-400のコクピット内の計器類の解説、実際の運行、後半はパイロットとして不可欠な航空工学、航法、世界時間の概念、無線、気象に関する解説までを網羅し、わかりやすく丁寧に描かれた決定版。読後、パイロットはあらゆる知識を身につけ、運行中は大変な集中力で計器の監視を行っていることを知らされた。機体の操縦、制御の自動化が進んでいるとはいえ、膨大な量の計器、そこからもたらされる情報量の多さにビックリ。
　残念なのは著者が元英国航空機長であるため、ロンドン発～ニューヨーク行きのフライトを紹介していること。地名などの点でわれわれ日本人にはピンとこないところがある。これが例えば羽田発～那覇行きならもっとイメージしやすかったが、それでもフライトの臨場感は十分に伝わってくる。
　飛行機好きなら中学校高学年から理解できるのでは。マニア必見の1冊。

私は高知空港のタワー（管制塔）及びレーダーで勤務する航空管制官です。訳者の小西氏とは、氏が現役時代にはきっと幾度か無線を通してお耳に掛かったことと思います。
第Ⅰ部のロンドン～ニューヨーク間を読み進めますと、まるで、スチュワート機長の操縦するB-747に搭乗しているような臨場感と感動に包まれました。オペレーションルームでの、飛行経路及び目的地のウェザーチェック、それに伴う代替空港と搭載燃料の決定、各種スピードの算出。この頃より気分はすでに「一足お先に」と、大空に舞い上がります。
第Ⅱ部は航空に関する知識の宝庫で、私も航空人の一人でありながら「ホー成る程」と唸らされることしきりでした。一例では、航法についてはかつて学校で習ったものの、随所に挿入されている見やすいイラストや、一般の読者でも読みやすく訳された文章は、私のうっすらしか理解していなかった部分をハッキリさせていただき、また、まだ知らなかった航法の歴史などにも知識を広げる事ができました。惜しむらくは、第Ⅰ部の出発地か到着地のどちらかが日本であれば、我々日本人読者にとっては、より親近感が増していたのではと思いました。
訳者あとがきで小西氏は「この本をエアラインに在職する運航関係以外の方々に読んでいただきたい」旨を訴えられておられますが、私は敢えて「その方々以外にも、航空に携わるすべての人がこの本を読み、パイロットの立場と航空機の運航をよく理解して、より強く航空の安全を支えるべきだ」と唱えたい。

訳が読みにくいのが残念…

パイロットの仕事、知識を平易に網羅した、素晴らしい内容だと思います。しかし、日本語版としては今ひとつ読みづらく、一部内容の難しさも相まって、読むのに時間がかかってしまうこともあるかもしれません。これから飛行機のことを知ろうという方にオススメ。

This book was written many years ago when some of the big jets of today were at best dreams of the manufacturer. It has been updated to the Boeing 747-400, meaning that if the author chooses, there is additional updating that can be done. But even as such I found the information contained therein to be fascinating. The first part of the book gives background to what is in a plane, including the instruments, navigation, principles of flight, air traffic control, and many others. The second part of the book (about a third) describes a flight from London to New York in the plane from the pilot's vantage point; it is at this point that all the information learned in the first part becomes background to what is happening during the flight.

While some of the information given was less interesting to me than other, I would have been surprised if it was any other way. I cannot say whether the information contained in this book is helpful to commercial pilots, as I am merely a person fascinated by flight. But for others like me, at all levels of knowledge, I believe that it is the best book I have read so far on the subject.

Don't get me wrong, Stanley is a great pilot and author, I'm no expert, and this is only my opinion (everybody's different).
I personally felt that this book was lacking substance, depth and struggled to understand what his target audience is.

The book seems to be aimed at intrigued passengers or enthusiasts, however the information (to me) seems too advance for the passenger (using aviation terms) and lacking in depth for the enthusiast. Although having said that, there is an odd thing or two that I got out of it so this comes in handy for something.

I was personally looking for more depth in the FMS/C (Flight Management Computer), calculating fuel (distance & weights), 747-400 cockpit layout and areas to be able to recreate real flights on a simulator.

As you may of seen in the "preview" of the book, he teaches you the different Instruments and principles of flight in the chapters. Note: These are well explained to a basic level and are explained in good, well presented diagrams.

Summary

- A well explained book
- Lacking depth
- Ideal for newcomers to simulation (Flying older aircraft/ steam gauged instruments)
- Great for understanding the principals of flight, navigation etc.
