This book was SO GOOD........
2002年6月12日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This book was so good, after I read it I reordered it in hardbound so that it would "keep better" on my shelf. This way I can pass around my paperback copy to my co-workers at the shelter I work at. Since I work in a "no-kill", privately funded shelter full time, I can relate to the stories told in Ms. Hess' book. Even though we are "no-kill", we work very closely with our city funded shelter (the pound) to transfer animals out of there that are on the euthanasia list. This is a hard job, choosing who will live and who will die for us, but the hardest part is for people who work in euthanasia full time. These are the folks who have to "clean up the mess" of others who fail to spay or neuter their pets, the "backyard" breeders and the general population who fail to keep that life long commitment they made to their pets when they dump them at the shelter. By the way, very few of the animals that are dumped find homes. Stray animals are kept up to 72 hours, depending on cage space. Owner released animals are usually killed immediately, or as one employee said to a surrenderer, "As soon as the ink is dry on your release form, your animal will be dead." Recommended reading for anyone who wants to run out and get a pet, should be required reading. Please excuse my harshness, but I'm writing this in the middle of "kitten season."

All potential pet owners should read this book.

This book details life inside a NY animal shelter. The writer starts out as a somewhat naive pet lover who visits the shelter to purchase a pet for her child. She's so taken with the place and the plight of the animals that she begins to volunteer her time. As she spends more time inside the shelter, she begins to understand all of their rules, procedures and the distrust the employees have towards potential adopters, those who surrender their pets and most people in general. It's a gripping and very realistic account of what happens inside the shelter and tells so many stories of helpless animals and thoughtless people. It also shows the good side of daily shelter life; placing a pet into a loving home, saving animals from abuse and neglect, giving an unwanted pet a second chance through training, love and attention. I thought it did a decent job of showing both sides of the story though sadly it is a reality that the story is often a sad one. The next to final chapter details euthanasia and is difficult to read but important to do so. I wish every pet owner would be required to read this book before buying, adopting or taking in a pet.

An amazing insight to those who are abandoned

If you love animals and root for the 'underdog' (no pun intended) - this book will have you cheering, tearing and running to your local animal shelter/rescue: not only to adopt the poor souls who were considered, by another, as unwanted - but also to devote time & talent to finding good homes for the wayward.
It is a honest portrayal of a very real situation in this country: the overpopulation of pets. If you hesitate or waver on 'spay & neuter', read this book.

A very realistic view of an animal shelter
2002年11月19日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I've volunteered at the animal shelter in my town for a few years now, but have never had quite as much insight as this book provided. I get the feeling the shelter in the book has a smaller volunteer base than the shelter I have dealt with based on the details they were willing to share with her. This was a very uplifting book that explained a lot about why shelters work the way they do (ie rules about who can adopt, what happens when they get lost pets, etc.). Unfortunately, it is most likely to be read by the people that already understand these rules and why they exist.

Too good to miss

I recently ordered this book from Amazon- I think I shop more online than in stores lately!- and it is a great book to read, I actually owned a well-loved copy of it but at some point I misplaced it, so I thought I'd get another copy. I have six pets, all rescues, and I wish more people understood the reality of shelters.
