So the book.
It's softcover, which is probably one of the very few things I wish was different. But it's sturdy enough to have survived shipping from Japan as well as being curled (GASP) to fit in my tiny apartment mailbox. Do I wish it was hardcover? Yes, yes I do, but I feel that's more of a personal preference than anything.
Now the insides.
Wow. Like really, *wow*. Yusuke Murata is, in my very humble and limited opinion, one of the best manga artists to ever exist. Some people know him better for illustrating One Punch Man, but his talent really shines in Eyeshield 21. Each page of this art book contains a fully colorized picture that was originally serialized in the individual volumes. Some of the pictures cover a two-page spread, which is kiiiinda a bummer because the middle of the book just cuts right through the best parts of the picture. Another personal opinion, one that would have led me to taking away a star if not for the fact that I love this artbook so much I would literally die for it.
So the art is just beautiful. Like honestly, Murata has such an amazing command of facial expression and body language it feels like the characters are ready to jump off the page and run around my room. I want to say that the pictures include pretty much every match up to the Naga vs. Devilbat match, but I'm not 100% on that. You get a little bit of every character from the series up to that point and there's a great mixture of actual manga captures and then fun 'extras' like chibis and 'photograph' collages.
Honestly, if you love this series and are a bit depressed that there's not much merch for it despite it being a completely finished 37-volume series (that's also more than a decade old, to be fair), I would suggest finding a way to getting your hands on this book. It's a sweet addition to the collection and features Murata's amazing art in full color. The last few pages of the artbook also have an interview with Inoue Takehiko, who is best known for the basketball manga "Slam Dunk", and several pages featuring early designs for Sena, Hiruma, and Kurita.
I think it goes without saying that this book is entirely printed in Japanese and reads from right-to-left.
