Eleanor Coppola was at the shooting scene when her famous movie director Francis Ford Coppola made “Apocalypse Now” in 1979.
This book chronicled such events as the near destruction of the film's production as well as the stress that both cast and crew were suffering from at the time.
The conditions in the Philippines were more than challenging: excessive heat, huge winds, even a typhoon that took out all the roads and destroyed much of the equipment, but the worst of all was the cast.
For example, Coppola believed that Marlon Brando was familiar with Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" and had prepared for the role before the legendary actor arrived on the set. When Brando did come out, Coppola was horrified to find that Brando had never read "Heart of Darkness", did not know his lines, and had become extremely fat (Kurtz had always been written as a tall but starvingly-thin man).
After some panicking, Coppola decided to film the 5'10" Brando as if he was a massively built, 6'5" brute (to explain Brando's size) and steered the camera clear of Brando's huge belly.
On top of that, there were also serious problems about the other cast. Martin Sheen, who pushed himself so far, had a heart attack on set and nearly died. Dennis Hopper was addicted to drugs. Including Brando, they could not remember their lines, or did not try to remember their lines. They almost drove Coppola out of his mind with their unwanted improvisation and incredibly crazy behaviors.
In spite of the fact that it was made under such unfavorable circumstances, this movie is now regarded as the greatest war movie ever made and in the famous movie magazine “The Sight and Sound” this film was ranked #14 of all the greatest movies in history.

A different view of Apocalypse Now
Fascinating view of the making of Apocalypse Now by the film's diarist and director's wife, now a fine documentary maker in her own right. A great addition to the collection of the film, studio cut and director's cut and the documentary of the making. How this film ever got finished always astonishes me.

A perfect companion piece to "Hearts of Darkness." All of the dirty secrets that Coppola kept hidden from that documentary are on full display here.

Interesting but not important

Eleanor Coppola’s recounting of the making of Apocalypse Now was interesting at best. She recounts the incredible challenge in making a movie that attempted an analogy to Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Conrad only had to put on paper the journey up a jungle river. Coppola had to find a jungle, hire actors and extras to go there and to create special effects in the Philippines in terrible conditions. She details the financial overruns, the temperamental actors, her own personal family problems galore with great frankness. All in all, worth a read-a good cautionary tale for anyone wanting to go into cinema as I once did.

Unique account

Interesting episodic account of life on the road or should I say jungle/beach/paddy fields. Having recently watched the extended version of the film my son sent me this book and it was a timely read. No idea how the Coppola family survived this adventure but I’m glad they did. The closing sections dwelled a bit on what we British might sometimes see as self analysis but the making of this brilliant film clearly took its toll on the people most closely involved.
