This story was originally published under a pen name, but it lives up to the Stephen King reputation. One neighborhood is suddenly besieged with trouble as in murders in broad daylight by strange characters in vehicles. At the center is an autistic child and it seems that wherever this child has gone, death has followed. The story is surprising, engaging and draws us into one neighborhood's trauma. Highly recommended.

Kingが1996年に、「Desperation」と合わせて書き上げた作品で、Richard Bachman名義で著わしている。登場人物の名前は、「Desperation」と同じなのだが、役柄は別である。また内容はSF的である一方、残虐性では姉妹作品よりも上かもしれない。けれどもKingがそれだけの作家であったなら、恐らく飽きられていただろう。

Kingは、『Summer's here. Not just summer, either; not this year, but the apotheosis of summer, the avatar of summer, ----------』と書き始める。時は1996年7月15日、午後3時45分、所はオハイオ州Wentworth、Bear StreetとHyacinth Streetに挟まれたPoplar Street、この区画には12軒の家が建っている。そしてこのたった12軒しかない区画が惨劇、起こるはずのない事件の舞台となる。

そしてこうした起こるはずのない事件の原因がどこにあるのか、だんだんと明らかにされていく。『---------- It’s very, very scary for a cartoon show. Seth was terrified of it―he wet the bed three nights in a row after seeing it for the first time―but he also was exhilarated by it.----------』そして、Sethの一家が経験したDesperationと呼ばれる街で経験した事件についても語られている。Kingは三人称で語られる文章だけでなく、手記、登場人物の目を通して描写する文章を織り交ぜながら、事件について明らかにしていく。

『---------- At one moment Kim Geller is standing at the end of the Carver’s walk; at the next she’s entirely gone. No; not quite gone. Her sneakers are still there, and her feet are still inside them. ----------』こんな文章は、Kingを読んでいれば、いくらでも出てくる。けれども次のような文章も、Kingが得意とするところだ。『---------- The storm had moved on, but there was one isolated thunderhead just west of them. It hung over downtown Columbus, connected to Ohio by a gauzy umbilicus of rain, and it made the shape of a gigantic cowboy galloping on a storm-colored stallion.----------』

そしてKingの場合には作品のどこかに、ホラーだけではすませることのできないものが潜んでいる。それがKingの作品が凄惨で、恐ろしいものを描いても、読者に残すものが嫌悪感だけではないことに通じているのかもしれない。

This item would probably not have been published if Stephen King had not hit the big time with his other novels. This is a loose collection of mostly obscenities and nasties with a little gore to glue it together. It appears to be a test project for future novels.
I will not go too much into detail as each incidence relies on surprise. However we start out with a normal small town. Bizarre events eventually turn into a surrealistic nightmare. People are trapped in a twilight zone type of atmosphere and the question is if anyone will survive? It does not look possible.

I read Desperation many years ago and loved it. I knew there was a Richard Bach man novel that was a 'mirror' novel, but had never taken time to get it and read it. There were just too many good Stephen King novels to get through. So here I am, many years later and caught up on most of those novels. So, I felt it was time to read Richard Bachman novels. I started with this one, and it was great. Right on par with Desperation. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did.

Mr Stephen King, with "Desperation" and "The Regulators", has demonstrated that he is undoubtedly a master. It doesn't matter if one reads one book before the other ; I imagine the magic will operate either way. However, one DOES HAVE to read the two books. Individually, each one is fine. Taken together, one after the other, it is an amazing reading experience – I am a very experienced reader and I have never encountered anything like this before : an author that, having completed a piece of work, will set a challenge to himself along those lines : You take a story. With its characters. You rework the whole thing so it becomes something completely new, and yet, not really. There is even a "scene" in both books which is, at once, the same and not the same. Truly extraordinary ! Heartfelt thanks to mr King.
Furthermore, this digital edition is extremely well done. Amazon should make an effort to supply its readers with quality editions like this one.

I don’t know why but I don’t like Richard Bachman.
I can understand the reasons behind wanting to be someone else- that whole journey of exploration thing. Richard...he’s just not nice. Not as rounded as Stephen. Juvenile even. I may one day look back at this review and be thinking I was harsh. Today is not that day though.
I like the story, because I like Stephen King.
I’ve read this before, 15 or 20 years ago- because I knew it was written by Stephen King.
So it’s King-like....but...not.
