Deep. Profound. Superb. Touches your heart.

Different than Patterson’s other books about politics - though those were also superb. Every few chapters, this book goes deeper and deeper into family dynamics - love, death, control, lies, trauma, and the complexity of family relationships that endures over generations.
Caroline, is an extraordinarily successful San Francisco attorney and judge. The US President is recommending her for a top level judge when she is called home to New Hampshire by her father. Caroline hasn’t been home since college. But Caroline’s niece, Brett, is being accused of murdering her boyfriend. So Caroline returns, initially for 1 - 2 days, but finds herself investigating and representing her niece, and staying weeks as the mystery and trial unfold. That’s the basic story, but the book is about much, much more.
I intensely felt the complexity and depth of all the character’s relationships - Caroline, her father, her half-sister and brother-in-law … and especially young Brett, accused of murder. The stakes are high. The book delves deeply into family relationships going back decades and surfaces control, jealousy, lies, affairs and the different ways people express love … and the consequences.
I identified with all the characters. Brett’s mother’s need to control was like my mother. Caroline falling deeply in love in her early 20’s - then returning 20+ years later after a highly successful career, to try to save her niece from a first degree murder charge and life in prison. Every character felt like my family. Very intense. Very personal. And right on target.
And all embedded in a mystery and thriller. Extraordinary book! Couldn’t put it down! It will stay with me a very long time.

Love this author and only sad I had to wait 9 years for Trial to be published. Clever use of current day political arena woven around charismatic characters. Please pass on my compliments to the author if possible.

Well Researched, Meticulous Detail, Gripping!

This is the first Richard North Patterson novel I have read - it will not be the last.
The plot of the book, without giving too much away, is about a woman, a senior defence lawyer, who has distanced herself from her family for 20+ years, but goes back 'home' to defend a niece, whom she has never met, who is accused of murder.
The action is fast paced, the undercurrents building slowly but emphatically towards the climax. There is subtlety in the relationships, great character analysis of the key players with their weaknesses and strengths well drawn and meticulously thought out. Most of the main characters are easy to empathise with, whatever their views, in some way. All are well rounded whole personalities.
As the book progresses, we discover more about the reason for the fissure in the family, the tensions and the conflicts.
If I was to mark the book down at all, it would be that ultimately I guessed the nature of the family problem, though not the detail, and the identity of the killer, but even bearing that in mind, it still gets * * * * * from me.
A great page turner, even at 600 pages, and a great read.

This is one of the early books y R N Patterson, but it starts featuring a character that will play important roles in future novels, as well as the style we will find in his future books. Final Judgement is an intense thriller, where personal and family stories are nicely blended with the legal plot; we start seeing in this novel the author's ability of giving texture and depth to his key characters. I had read this book almost 20 years ago and I found it in my hands again in these days: I can say that I enjoyed it as the first time.
