何も言わずに☆５つにするのが読んだ者の義務といえる一冊。
シリーズ二作目の邦題に多少不満の向きもあられるかと思うが、本作は見事。

暗い焔がチロチロと舐めるような冒頭から始まり、徐々にスピードを増していく物語。やがて男たちの重い情熱が物語の発火装置を作動させ、
一気に点火した激情が燃え上がるラストは小気味よくて読者を飽きさせない。

・・・何も言うまい。ワシントンサーガを一作目から読んでいる読者なら、ピートカラスから始まる男たちの物語にぜひ酔いしれてほしい。

未知の作家の本を読む場合、いかにその作家のリズムに乗れるかが問題であるが、本書は冒頭が秀逸なので、うまく乗れるかと思った。ただ、その後、ストーリーが拡散し、また、饒舌になってきたので危惧したが、やがて、これがこの作家のスタイルだと気づき、読み進もうと思った。

本書の中に、こういう文章があった。
――人間には2つの種類がある。子供を失った人間と、そうでない人間と・・・・。
胸が痛くなった。こういう本を読むと、なぜ、私が本を読み続けるのか、納得してしまう。

ベッドシーンは物語に重要ではないので、飛ばした。息子を亡くした割にはセックスを楽しんでるし、主人公に感情移入出来ず。最後はあっさり。別段引き込まれる程の内容ではありませんでした。

I hate reviews that reveal the plot...so....this is engaging; along with the 'hard men' it also has reflective, even sentimental moments. Worth every penny and as the title of this review refers, Pelecanos knows how to 'press your buttons' with this excellently constructed tale.

au départ j'étais un peu perdue car le nombre de personnages est important, mais petite fiche aidant, j'ai dépassé cette difficulté. Je trouve une qualité très cinématographique aux scènes du livre. Le lecteur est témoin d'une même scène du point de vue de différents personnages. Je me suis laissée prendre par l'intrigue.

At the core of Shame the Devil is a robbery that goes deeply wrong, leaving numerous dead bodies - including that of a child - in its wake. That's an essential component of this book, because Shame the Devil is deeply focused on people coping with grief, their own decisions, and the past choices they've made that define them. As always with Pelecanos, there's definitely a plot to Shame the Devil, but it's far from the focus of the book; rather, Pelecanos is exploring the haunting effects that the death of a loved one can have, from denial to rage to a full-on emotional breakdown, and there's no escaping the pain and honesty which which Pelecanos approaches that aspect. Just as much, though, Pelecanos remains focused on people's efforts to change and escape their past, be it their own actions or the painful pasts of their families. Don't skip this, though, because I've made it sound like a brutal, depressing read. Shame the Devil is a great read, filled with Pelecanos's beautiful knack for dialogue, fascinating characters of differing ethnicities and genders (something that's so often neglected in many novels), strong plotting that manages to surprise numerous times, and a pitch-perfect ending that works both thematically and from a plot perspective. Pelecanos is one of the most gifted and intelligent crime authors writing today; his stories are compelling, but more importantly, his characters are beautifully drawn, and his perception of the world around him is unmatched, and Shame the Devil shows all of that, and shows it excellently.

When a pizza shop robbery takes a violent turn, the thieves are never caught and the lives of several people are torn apart, most notably Dimitri Karras when his young son Jimmy is struck and killed by the criminals as they make their getaway. Years later, Dimitri is trying to put his life back together when he runs into an old acquaintance, PI Nick Stefanos. But what connection does Dimitri have with that fateful robbery...?

The DC Quartet goes out with a bang and it's my favorite George Pelecanos yet. The stories of Dimitri Karras and Nick Stefanos intersect and the whole is even better than the sum of its parts.

When we catch up with Dimitri, he's divorced and can't escape the memory of his dead son. He's in a support group with the other friends and relatives of the murder victims from the pizza shop robbery. Nick's still working at the Spot and still taking on PI work but is staying away from murder and drugs. He's still battling his considerable drinking problem.

The story comes together very organically. By now, the denizens of Pelecanos' DC are pretty real for me and the interactions between Nick and Dimitri were my favorite parts of the book. When Nick got Dimitri a job at the spot, I had a feeling how the end would shape up. I was nearly right and I'm glad the ending didn't mirror The Big Blowdown.

It was cool to see Boyle working with Karras and Stefanos. I missed Marcus Clay and Clarence Tate but it was cool knowing how they ended up after The Sweet Forever. Good for them!

The book has a slow build as the killers return to DC and Nick and Dimitri eventually cross paths. While I didn't think the gun fight at the end was as good as the one in The Sweet Forever, I liked the ending a whole lot more. The greedy part of me wants to read another book about Nick and Dimitri but I'm glad Pelecanos is leaving them behind for now. They've earned it.

Shame the Devil brings closure to both the DC Quartet and the Nick Stefanos trilogy. Like I said above, it's my favorite Pelecanos so far.
