Exceptionally detailed account of Pablo’s final years. A rapid scroll of the Sources pages shows the amout of research and work that was done to weave together such a great story.
As a reader, I wanted more about Pablo the man, but from what I can surmise now that I have read Bowden’s book, such an account is does not exist and never will: relatives would talk about him trying to defend his memory, while enemies would discredit him as much as possibile. Thus, regarding the man, there’s nothing we can do to understand him more in depth.
Finally, one thought about the moral of the entire affair. I am no sympathetic to narcos but I cannot help but think that sheer persecution of a person - whatever the person - in the name of some supposed higher principle, is bad. Colombian and american authorities were after Escobar as though Escobar had in his hands all of the traffic of cocaine in the world. In reality, they were just doing what they were not supposed to do: to show themselves as the good guys, acting like Escobar acted and being hypocritical to the marrow. In all of this, the millions of dollars spent on the hunt did not reduce the tons of cocaine entering the US. In conclusion, the hunt was successful, but the war was literally lost. This was a needless war against a supposed enemy, while the real enemy was thriving and empowering itself.
A great failure in the same historical period of another giant failure, e.g., the war on Mohammed Farrah Aidid (for which story I warmly recommend you to read “Black Hawk Down”)...

A Cautionary Tale
Pablo Escobar - seventh richest man in the world, playboy of epicurean tastes, member of congress, man of the people, builder of houses for the poor.
Pablo Escobar - supplier of eighty percent of the cocaine in America, violent criminal mastermind, murderer of dozens of judges and journalists, hundreds of policemen, even presidential candidates.
Pablo Escobar - darling of his hometown, who held a nation hostage with his bombing campaigns and kidnapping spree.
Pablo Escobar was leader of Colombia's Medellin mega-cartel, and this is the often surreal story of how he was brought down. But not before he had bent and twisted the state to his own will, and almost gotten away with it too. The war with Pablo was long, and bloody, with each new escalation more unbelievable than the last. Corrupted by drug money, already in a protracted civil war with communist guerrillas, and terrorized by Pablo, the Colombian state cuts a sorry figure. Over it all looms the brooding shape of the American behemoth, tinkering, interjecting, and pressurizing wherever required to assure Pablo's fall.
Secure in his cushion of endless drug money, his vast illicit empire, did Pablo aim too high too soon? Were his naked political ambitions the last straw for Colombia's old elite, and the superpower to the north? Or was Colombia staring into a precipice of narcotics trade fuelled freefall, a breakdown of democracy, courtesy Pablo and his ilk?
This is a fast-paced, suspenseful read, and it takes one right into the heart of the chase. It begins with an account of Pablo's emergence, and continues at break-neck speed right until his death. It is based on interviews with Americans and Colombians involved, and corroborated by archival research. This is a journalistic enquiry meant for the lay reader, so it does not go into an analysis of any systemic issues or causes of the conflict. But it could still be read as a cautionary tale by denizens of third world countries, ever wary as we are of social inequities, cycles of violence and the unchecked influence of money on vulnerable states.
And yes, this book is what the first two seasons of Netflix's Narcos is based on. The series takes some liberties with characters and events, but broadly remains faithful to the narrative here.

Very well written book by Mark Bowden. Gives you a lot of insight into the man himself and the history of the Columbian drug trade. A great read! !
