Written at a time that Apartheid was still very strong, Coetzee gave a philosophical to life in that environment, which in this case is a surreal post-civil war South Africa with all the horrors that come with the aftermath of a civil war, especially an African civil war. However, Michael K. makes the effort to shield himself from the harshness of his environment by taking on a life of existential survival. In fact the lesson from this book applies to all environments or situations where society makes it difficult for a private person to live a personal life that is independent of the forces of the environment.

An imaginative story about spiritual freedom
This captivating novel can be viewed as an allegorical representation of the search for spiritual freedom, as embodied in the peculiar character of Michael K, a simple, unassuming man of limited intellect. In a time of civil war and repressive measures that herd the jobless and other undesirables into work camps, K, equally averse to charity and servitude, doggedly pursues his idea of freedom, passively resisting social and political forces through evasion and flight, seeking refuge and peacefulness in nature. For K--someone who has never felt love, but only expectations from others--human bonds are entrapments that stand in the way of freedom.

Coetzee inhabits some of the most unusual but important characters in modern literature
This book for me is one of Coetzees darkest realisations. But it also contains seeds of hope in its harrowing narrative.
Michael K is a man who I feel represents the desperate longing for simplicity in life that most of us camouflage with our busy lives of distraction...a man bought to the edges of total desperation born of his unfortunate unlucky origins and a facial disfigurement at a time and in a society where industrial sea change had no room for those with any kind of a handicap.
This relatively short story reminded me in many ways of Okri's spellbinding epic Famished Road, but this time from the point of view of someone who had always lived a life sheltered from the storm of that societal sea change and totally unprepared for the battle to survive he would soon need to confront.
Coetzees books demand repeat reading, such is the complexity he finds in his often surprising characters, and after one reasd of Michael K I just know that I've read yet another important novel by an artist who shaves off disturbing layers of his narrators and who also inhabits his torn characters so well.
Safe to say that whilst pretty much all his other books are more enjoyable reads for me it is hard to deny the importance of the territory Coetzee plots in each novel....including this one.
I recently started growing my own pumpkins and found that part of the narrative the most enthralling and painful.
Pity is such an important axis of this book and it would be a pity to give this a miss if you are already a fan of this great writer.

Don't expect a jolly mood, this is about a poor soul trying to find peace in life during the oppressive apartheid era.
