Old, Outdated, Aged Poorly

I do not really like the book. Jensen has some good points, especially in the beginning, but quickly seems to get more and more deluded and out-of-touch as time goes on. Granted, this book was written in 2001, but it has not aged well in 19 years. As a result, I am rating it a solid 2/5 stars.
I think this due to several instances. In the beginning, only sentences and paragraphs were glaringly problematic, but the last three chapters are almost entirely problematic. This means the book is at best 2/5ths useful information, hence the rating. He starts out by describing what the “Dream Society” is, but takes an unexplained sidetrack talking about the story behind products. He uses this as evidence for why the dream society is coming, more than to describe what it is, and leaves it unsupported and seemingly randomly inserted in the beginning pages of the book. He then goes back to making a linear argument that is rather convincing: creativity will be more marketable than labor or skill. However, the confusion so early in the book is a worrying thought. He also displays a worrying amount of disconnect with certain groups. I do not resonate with, “We buy groceries with our hearts” (5). Being a poor college student, I most certainly buy groceries with my brain. I also do not think that the future will necessarily be like how he describes, as the world I see is becoming more and more cynical, and less and less fantastical like he wishes it to be. I believe that his premise of the changing world is correct, and even his idea that ideas will become valuable is correct, but I don’t agree with what he thinks it will mean in terms of the shift from companies to tribes. I also think he has missed the decomposition of the family unit, in the United States at least. The last chapter seems to think that the middle class, the global standard of living, and international cooperation will increase and grow, a statement that hasn’t aged well.
The book is a product of its time. The DOTCOM crash of the early 2000s was occurring around the time of publication, so it is easy to see why the author would think the information age would be ending sooner than reality. It was before the 2008 recession, and the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, which has halted the economic boom needed to cause this shift to occur in meaningful ways. This only works in a complete utopia. The economy, world governments, national and international society all need to cooperate, among other things. Realistically, this is never going to functionally work, at least not in the way he envisions it and not for a long time.
Do I think that there is a market for this book? Who should read it? I think it has a market for those interested in the fantastic, or who want to think about what could be, or what people thought would be. I do not think there is a person who should read this for practical advice or for any serious purpose. It is an old book, and most of the information contained within is not useful for anyone, and the information that is useful can be found elsewhere.

Not New

I gave this book a 1 star because it was used. If I buy something that is marked as new, I want it with no bruises or lines on it. Just simply "new" as claimed.
