タイトルに惹かれて読んでみました。
英国の田舎が舞台のとても魅力的な作品でした。
斬新なイントロダクションがまず秀逸。
登場人物たちの会話運びも楽しくテンポよく、それぞれのキャラが一人一人目に浮かぶよう！
「埋もれた名作」と書こうかと思ったら、数年前の「このミス」の海外版16位かなにかにランクインしていたようですね。
さすがっ！！
フェン教授シリーズ、続けて読んでみようと思います。
この「ヴィンテージ･ミステリ・シリーズ」はたいへんレベルが高いです。
「ミステリなら早川か創元でしょ！」と思っていましたが、原書房、イケてます！！
品位あるミステリがお好きな方におすすめです。

静かな村の暮らしをおびやかす、悪意を持った中傷の手紙。だれかれなく届けられ、手がかりはたくさんあるようには見えるが警察では差出人をつきとめられないまま。村の宿屋に宿泊している謎の男、ダチェリー氏が調査に乗り出してみるが、手紙がもとで自殺者まででてしまう。果たして犯人は誰なのか？そしてその目的は？
英国ミステリによくある、中傷の手紙がテーマのミステリです。内容もいかにも英国風、主要人物や脇役、ホンのちょっとしか出ない村の人々までとてもいきいきと描かれていて、特に容疑者の女性と捜査する刑事、二人の関係はどうなるのだろう？と、一挙一動にわくわくします。ただ、二人の恋愛模様はいろいろあって盛り上がりますが、事件の調査の側から見ると起伏に乏しいように感じ、良くいえば静かにジックリと、悪くいえば淡々と語られていきます。と思いきや、最後で著者の巧みなミスディレクションと、見事なまでの伏線の張り方に「あっ」と驚かされます。
「何が淡々とだ！何で気付けなかったんだ！」と自分の読みの甘さにガッカリさせられる、極めて上質のミステリです。

Some of the letters are obscene, some expose scandalous behavior. Somehow the writer has gotten hold of all the village secrets. The turmoil that ensues leads to suicide and murder, and suspicion settles on one of the most sympathetic characters in the book — a young unmarried woman doctor.

Amidst the chaos of crime, love blossoms in more than one quarter. This is both heartwarming and distressing, since the course of true love doesn’t run smooth.

The plot is really very clever, heavily seeded with alarming circumstantial evidence. This is a Gervase Fen mystery, but he keeps out of sight till it’s time to clean up the mess of the investigation.

Since this is my first encounter with Gervase Fen, and Edmund Crispin, I had no expectations. Now I’m definitely interested in Crispin, even though his prose is challenging, replete with startling metaphors, showy descriptions — and excessively whimsical behavior on the part of Gervase Fen.

But that said, The Long Divorce is a delightful feel-good mystery with a very absorbing plot. The cast of characters includes an endearing if dim-witted marmalade cat.

Set in 1950, and published in 1951, it's remarkable how some things haven't changed; sweet rationing may have gone, but there are still plenty of rural areas in the UK suffering from the same complaint as Cotton Abbas 'a residential village for members of the upper middle class... who needed to be within reach of London' and who 'had restricted new building, and dictated its style when it proved inevitable; they had sat in judgement on inn-signs...ordained a minimum bus service...and stringent anti-charabanc laws...to keep trippers at bay'. I'm only surprised that bans on church bells and crowing cockerels hadn't been considered!
The book is full of wry - and acute - observations on all manner of subjects, even as the mystery of the anonymous letters, subsequent suicide and strange murder are investigated by the inhibited Inspector Casby and the brave, redoubtable, and ambitious PC Burns. Light is thrown on the matter at a crucial point by the enigmatical Mr Datchery, and the large, clumsy marmalade cat called Lavender (what else?), which sees and pursues Martians in the oddest of places, yet makes a valuable contribution to the proceedings. There are some literary allusions and words seldom seen in fiction anymore ('bombinate'; 'fouxbourdon'; 'volplane'); there are moments of suspense, terror, and despair, yet there's also time for romance, gossip, and - yuk! - spider racing.
This book is unusual in the Fen cannon, in that the man is not at the centre of the tale, but the story is somehow more serious for that very reason. Although some of the incidental characters are little more than stock types, it's so cleverly written that it's almost impossible to put the book down. It's just a pity there are so many careless proof-reading errors ('looses its head'; 'Burns' books creaked'; 'his hands crew taut'; 'most doctor's don't mind'). Buy it regardless: it's an excellent, entertaining and well-written tale of the cauldron that bubbles in village life, where human nature is just the same as in cities, only without the protection of numbers and anonymity.

Someone in the village is sending nasty letters to its inhabitants; and, to make matters worse there also is a murderer on the loose. This is a classic British who-done-it with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.

I really enjoyed this book. It's set in that place we all love, The Past, in some bucolic county in summer (of course) where everyone knows their station and God is in his heaven.
Crispin's characters are beautifully drawn, the plot trots along at a good lick and one is left at the end exuding a sigh of satisfaction.
One star deleted for the author's penchant for obscure words, even ones that he's made up, but overall, well worth reading.
