キリスト教の歴史的展開の原動力、背景としての教会会議がこれ程わかりやすく書けるとは、、と筆者の力量にも感服。
一次資料に忠実な研究を積み上げてきた著者だからこそこのような語り方ができるのだろうと思いました。

誤解を受けるのを恐れずに言えば、初めから宗教本専門出版社のものなら、いくらでも入手できるだろう。だが、残念なことに、キリスト教に関する客観的な内容を維持している本は、最近の日本人女性著作者のものを含めて、ほとんど絶無である。この男性著者のN．P．タナー著「教会会議の歴史」に関しても、ことユダヤ・イスラムに関する点については、ほとんど全く沈黙したままだ。教会会議(公開議)の歴史なのだから当たり前だ、というのは自己弁護に過ぎない。重要な会議の総括には十字軍による異教徒殺戮、異端審問(魔女裁判)による女性迫害・火刑には言及したがらない。もはやそんな隠蔽の時代は終わったし、暴かれるの讃美歌の背後の夥しい無辜の民衆の呻き声なのだ。

Excellent outline of key meetings of Christians from the council of Nicea in 325 (first picture) to Vatican II in 1962-5 (second picture). Factual information about the meetings, an understanding of their discussions and decisions, the importance of these 21 councils for the development of Christianity until today, and likely into the future, as well as their influence upon world history, provide the contents. The style is compact and attractive, the price is fair. The book has been translated into seven languages (Italian, French, Spanish, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, with Chinese forthcoming), proof ot its popularity.

An excellent summary of the 21 Councils of the Catholic Church traditionally considered as ecumenical. Tanner effortlessly introduces the reader into the basic elements of each council without leaving him/her bereft of the historical context accompanying each one. Thus, the reader grasps the essence of each council in a balanced way without being burdened with too much detail for the scope of the book. Although writing from a clear Catholic standpoint, Tanner is not insensitive to non Catholic sensibilities and he does not hesitate to lay responsibility on the Catholic side whenever it is deserved. A fine introductory work useful to the educated person and scholar alike.

This is an excellent introduction to the various church councils and all Christians, Catholics and non-Catholics alike should read this as essential reading to know more about the events that have shaped the faith to date. There is a very good biliography at the end for those who are interested in learning more but I do feel that perhaps a little more information could have been included as at 119 pages, this is truly a very short history of the councils and as such, lives up to the book's title. In any case, even a short history is better than not knowing anything about these great events in church history. Recommended reading.

This is book is an exceedingly slender paperback history of the Ecumenical Councils recognized by the Catholic Church. Father Norman Tanner SJ, a Jesuit historian and English translator of the councils, provides more a sketch here than a fully developed history. I prefer Christopher M. Bellitto's "The General Councils" on this same subject because it is better organized and more readable, but this little text is serviceable enough if you just want a taste of the topic without any particularly deep insights.
